A few more memories of our first Nullarbor crossing

I've been thinking of other bits of fun we had on our first crossing of the Nullarbor back in 75,
After we did the flood crossing and were back on tar seal, we were waved down by 4 blokes who apparently had got on the Grog in Melbourne, then one of them said lets head for Perth, so off they went,
they were driving an old Holden F.J. they had blown a tyre and had stopped us to see if they could buy our spare !!
they didn't have any tools, no water and no food, but they were happy as they had a couple of blocks of Beer on the back seat,
I recall advising them not to go any further as the road was shut and flooded, there reply was "she'll be right Mate' as soon as someone comes along with a spare tyre we'll be in Perth tonight. They had no idea how far they had to go, they were only about 100km west of Port Augusta at that point.
While travelling the dirt out near Ivy Tanks, we noticed that the old concrete water tanks there were completely empty. some fool had broken all the taps off them and let the water drain out,
Climbing the next rise I had to stop in amazement, the track dipped down into a hollow and had about a foot of bull dust in the bottom,
I remember saying to the Missis, are you sure we are on the inter-state highway ???? I couldn't believe that trucks actually drove this road to and from the West, mind you, we came across a few that didn't make it as well, there's many a wreck on that old Eyre Hwy.
