Would not have a van without both now that we have had the pleasure of our on board facilities wherever we are and whenever we want to use them.

Depends. If you stay in caravan parks all the time then no. For everybody else, absolutely necessary.

A Must Have
Even in a caravan park we use our shower no carting gear across to the amenities so easy.

Try finding the park's toilet in the dark, or during bad weather, especially if a prostate problem makes you a frequent user. An onboard toilet also makes travelling easier for someone with a prostate problem.

Welcome to the gang Mr Grizz, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I have for 3 years had a good old fashioned basin wash with the odd jump in a lake to freshen up a tad better.
Now I have the new Den with full Ensuite but until last Friday nit used it properly as I am trying to save the tank water until I rig up a pump system in the next couple of days. I have used the shower with a small plastic basin on the floor to splash Water all over me and wash down that way and works well. The shower has been used a couple of times as a shower too. The toilet is now in full use as well.
Now, I find the shower and toilet to great to have on board and I should have set up my shower tent in my previous Avan life but there ya go and I tell you that for free.
Go for the on board toilet and shower. I vote YES.

A pop-up ensuite and a Porta-Potti can do the same if your van does not have a built-in ensuite. We position out pop-up between the van and the vehicle where it sits private and secure. Just a metre outside the door.
But if we had a bigger van with the room then definately I'd want one.

We had a van without a shower or dunny just a portapotty for the wife, I thought shower and dunny was a waste of money
Then the new van shower and dunny on board and would not be with out it even when we are in van perks we use it no more standing in an inch of water trying to get dress

Mr Grizz,
We have a 17 foot van, mainly used touring with a mixture of caravan parks, low cost parks and freedom camping.
For little bit of luxury a porta pottie and outside portable shower which we manage quite well by. It not purfect but we enjoy our freedom with what we have.
Sometime down the track we may update and then we will have the on board luxuries fitted.
So at the moment no. Ralph

It's a big yes from Dhutime

We started out with a pop top, carried a porta loo and portable hot water system, when we upgraded we went with a van with an ensuite. I would definitely have to say yes, it's so nice not having to go walking in the dark and I was never a fan of park showers.

As you can see on the left, we don't have too much in the way of luxuries. But we manage with what we have just fine! Actually, the van on the left is not mine. I missed out on that one and had to settle for an old Avan instead......

We had a 18' jayco pop top for two years and about 8500 Kms with no shower and toilet. Up graded two years ago for the same sized make and model and this time the new van has a shower and toilet built in. Has to be one of the smartest things that i talked my wife into. Great for those midnight trips to the loo too !!
The cassette lasts about 2.5 days befour the full light comes on, not a problem to empty, just one of those things that one has to do from time to time.
One of the benefits haveing a shower is that one has extra water on board ( 2 tanks ) AND a gas/electric hot water system as well. Also great when it's time to do the washing up.
Also caravans with there own toilet/shower combination cost a lot more at purchase, but are worth a lot more as a trade in when it comes time to up grade ??

Well Grizz, I spent a few bob, installed a hot water unit from tank and electric 12v pump.. outside shower box, extended the hose to make life happy inside my pop up shower/ toilet tent, clip together foam rubber mats and life is wonderful.
But, do not shower at night with a light on unless you sell tickets first. Was greeted by an applause one night lol

Hi Grizz, do yourself a HUGEHUGE favour and get an onboard shower and toilet ,you will never regret it and never look back
Just think ,No more going out to the amenities block on those freezing ,raining and windy nights.
If there is one luxury that us seniors must have ,it is an onboard shower and toilet. Just sheer opulence.
Cheers,

We haven't had the luxury of an ensuite previously. Have always used the popup tents for the shower, porta potti later on, or smelly toilets or a hole in the ground. With our new van we will most certainly be having a full ensuite. Nothing else to put up and great for those midnight runs. After spending 3 weeks traveling and using amenity blocks I can't wait to have our own. People can be dirty and the amenities are not always kept clean. I am sure you won't regret having one.

Our van is our home, so a toilet and shower are a must. We also travel about and it would be very bad without those things in the bush.

The good thing now is that if you don't have shower and toilet in the van, the park amenities are now almost available for your exclusive use. I have been camping and caravanning for more than 60 years and there was a time when the amenities were so busy that you had to queue to use the showers, early morning or evening.
Cheers
