Hi, I'm about to hit the road full time at the end of January. Is there a compact printer that is suitable to keep in the van? Is there printers without scanning, copying function. If so does this make the printer smaller?
Cheers Pete

Hi Pete
We have a Cannon IP100 and it's a very good portable printer .It is approximately 330x210x60mm .It has it's own battery and runs off 240 as well.
The printer is not cheap but it is very good especially for printing photos and also does not take up a lot of room.
We have had the printer now for about 5years and so far no trouble(You get what you pay for).
Hope this helps.
Google it and see what you think.
Cheers,
Blues man.

This afternoon we looked at a $49 very basic laser monochrome Brother. Only want one in case have to print permits while travelling so do not want to bump an expensive machine arond

Just a heads up that while the Brothers are cheap printers, the consumables are ofter very expensive compared to other brands. Also I think an inkjet printer would be lighter than a laser - but that's just a guess.

We use local libraries in our travels. Only 10 cents per sheet with no dried up ink jets or cartridges out of toner. I reckon we save a fortune.

I like the last suggestion. Expect to pay $4-600 for one of the compact printers. Then expect to pay double the price for cartridges with smaller capacities for them. Cadpete seems to think Brother printer consumables prices are expensive, I don't think he has compared those with portable printer consumables.

Thanks for the replys, all helpful, Office Works has the ip100 for $200, I don't know if that's a special or regular price. I'll ring to find out.
I'll give thought to the library idea, internet cafes were the go once, I haven't seen any for a while.
All food for thought
Thanks Pete

That's an excellent price. I did a search on iP100 and got results around $300. When you check the price check to see whether the battery is included, some offers with these types of printers come without batteries. You will notice in my link that batteries are around $100. If it includes the battery then go for it, don't hesitate.
Hi Peter, it appears the only thing not included is the usb cable.
Cheers Pete

We have been travelling with an Epson (had them for years) but the problem when travelling & not using frequently the cartridges tend to dry up- $88 approx. for 4. Libraries no good when you receive your permit- eg GCR- via email to our computer. Fortunately I was able to email what I needed to friend we were travelling with & she printed permits for me.

I wonder why you dont want a scanner? I have a cheap HP ($58) with scanner which for me is vital. I have stuff emailed to me that needs signing so can sign, scan and email back. Yes - ink costs more than the original printer but after 3 years it has proved its usefulness often.

Depends upon how well you know your way around computers. I use Nitro Reader 3 as my PDF reader (see below.) When I go to my browser and select File > Print I get a pop-up screen called Print. In the section labelled Printer there is a drop down box labelled Name. When I click on the drop down arrow one of the menu selections is "Nitro PDF Creator (Reader 3.)" When I select that and then hit the OK button I get a pop-up asking where to save the resultant PDF file. After I have created my PDF file and saved it I can then do what I like with the file, including popping it onto a memory key and going to another computer/printer. I'm sure this will work with other PDF readers and browsers (apart from FF.)
Explanation from above: Some time back lots of us had a hell of a bad time when we upgraded to one of the versions of Adobe Reader. That's when I found there were many other better readers. Many of them are lighter weight and run better on Windows. Here is a list of cross platform viewers. Here is a list of Windows viewers. Five some of them a try, You will probably then give Adobe the flick. I have tried Foxit Reader: Nitro PDF Reader: Nuance PDF Reader: and PDF-XChange Viewer: - all work well. They also include features that are only available to Adobe users who have paid for Adobe Acrobat, particularly PDF-XChange. Don't get stuffed around by Adobe, jump ship.
