When free camping and you decide to turn in for the night...should I leave the gas hot water on or turn off. I'm guessing they operate like a domestic hws with a pilot light?
Thanks,
Collo.

Personally, I turn it off and only on when we want hot water. It doesn't take long for the water to heat up.

I have a continuous (Instant) hot water system fitted to the new Chief and not yet used it but I will be trying out the shower for the first rime in the morning. I just turn the 12v power switch on when I want hot water then turn it off again.

We switch the gas off when not using it and use the electric heater when in a CP or similar and are paying for a powered site.

Switch it off. I left it on by mistake one day and used up a full gas bottle. Completely forgot about it, was out sightseeing and had plenty of hot water but had to change the gas bottle. I also turn off the electricity once I have my water hot. Can't remember why, but I know when I purchased Miss Daisy, in the walk around and hand over it was something that I was told to do. So being a good little girl decided to do what I was told.

Definitely off because I can hear it starting and burning gas, and I am to tight to waste gas.

I always turn our HWS off when not in use. As said, 10 - 15 minutes heating provides ample hot water for 2 of us to shower. It is turned off before the first shower.
I have seen some people either leave it on constantly and some will turn it on for 30 minutes to do the dishes! Why boil 20L of water to use 2L on dishes?
I use the kettle for dishes, heat as much water as required.
Cheers Neil

As Delta18 above, why waste gas to wash the pots etc. we boil the jug ! for showering it takes around 15-20 mins enough for 2 showers easily.
We had someone next to us in a CP and their gas heater kept us awake all night firing up every hour or so, sounded like a jet engine ! god help the gas usage and cost.
The heaters only have minimal insulation so do not retain heat for that long, especially in cooler weather.
Just heat what you need when you need it.

We turn ours off when not required Colo, a 4.5kg cylinder of gas will last us for 5 or 6 weeks using the stove only, leaving the HW service on empties it quick smart.

If you turn on your hot water when you need it, you find you may save on the anode.

Turn it off Collo, when you're not using the HWS .
We turn ours on only when we want hot water.(free camping)
If we stay in a CP, then the HWS is powered by electricity.
Cheers,
Bluesman.

We turn ours on when we want to do the dishes after the first meal, it takes about 10-15mins to heat up from cold, after this we turn it off.
The next time we turn it on usually the night after or maybe lunch after it only takes about 5mins to heat up as our tank has superb insulation and keeps the water quite warm for a long period.
