I wouldn't have thought of that either, but a cigarette lighter works a treat on most rope, and stops the ends from fraying

if you put the rope over a corner of the drawbar or similar and hit it with a hammer it will cut quite cleaner you can do it with wire too cheers woollie

I'm trying to visualize anyone traveling in a caravan or motorhome who would not have a knife on hand to do this job.
There are heaps of different ways to improvise dividing a length of rope, however a knife is the simplest and most convenient, I always carry one, and of course there are multiple choices in the cutlery drawer of the MH.
How to cut a rope in an emergency without a knife or a pair of sissors , cheers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCNwxqP7l44#t=76
