Hi just bought an older pop top van. The fridge seems to light when switched to gas but goes out soon after.
Any tips appreciated, not sure whether it can be fixed or may need replacing. Would like it to run on gas as would not always have electricity available. Also where would I take it to be repaired?

is there sufficient gas in the cylinder?
does the van have a gas cooktop? If so try lighting that and see if it runs for a while with a good size flame.
the issue with the fridge could be as simple as it needs a clean or the gas regulator may need replacing.
There a few experienced gas people in here that may be along soon to help you.

The stove lights up and runs well so looks like plenty of gas in cylinder.
What part of the fridge would likely to need cleaning?
the van has been sitting for a few years unused if that makes a difference.

Yes Helen it could make a big difference.
It is a big help to also include the make and model number of your fridge as there are differing requirements for each model. This info should be on a label inside the fridge or on the inside of the door.
The gas burner area of the fridge will very likely need a clean and service and the chimney for the gas burner will also need to be checked.
Depending on the amount of access to the back of the fridge it may need to be removed from it's cubby hole.
This sort of work is best left to a licenced gas serviceperson experienced with these fridges.

Have a look at the regulator as well. If fridge and stove not working well you may need to sort that. Had my fridge 'serviced' twice by experts only to find that a new regulator solved the rpoblem and the gas hob worked so much better.

I had a problem with my gas fridge at first so I bought a can of compressed air, opened the hatch at the back of the fridge, and gave the pilot light burner a couple of squirts of air. With mine, it was a bit of rust that had fallen into the burner. I also make sure I keep the button depressed for for the required length of time after ignition (piezo). Anyway, all's well now and it works fine. Having a can of compressed air handy is good for cleaning various things.

In a previous van the stove worked fine but the fridge kept going out and it was found to be a blocked gas regulator.
There was heaps of problems with this a couple of years ago, and the supposed answer was to lift the reg above the top of the bottle, my van went through 3 regulators until this mod was done, then it was fine.
There was talk of faulty flexible hoses as the culprit too.

IS the flame establishing after you light it and how long is it staying alight for,need more info to diagnose and possibly talk you through fault finding.

Hi the flame goes out about 5 seconds after I release the button. I'm going to try another regulator first and rule that out.

I would be checking the thermocouple
Make sure it's tip is in the flame
Check IF the flame is full size[the outer edge should just reach the rim of the boiler tube
Do not waste your money on a reg until you KNOW that is the problem
If the stove burners are giving a good high flame, it is unlikely to be the reg!!

If flame going out shortly after establishing it could be a few things,the burner and injector may need cleaning.thermocouple may be in flame but flame may be burning soft which causes less heat on which in turn it will not create desired milli amp to energise magnetic coil on flame failure.Tip of thermocouple may be burnt out slightly.if your stove burners are burning two distinctive blue colours inner ligther blue than outer pressures are ok and it will not be regulator.I would suggest a qualified gasfitting technican would service and rectify fault fairly quickly.

Thanks again for all the help it's fantastic. I guess my next question is does anyone know of gas repair anywhere near Bacchus Marsh. Sorry for all the questions never had to do this before, big learning curve coming up I think!
