Today as I came out of the neighbourhood centre in Kuranda where I had been playing mah-jong I came across 2 stone curlews. They were just standing there pretending to be statues. So I was able to walk up to within 2 feet of them & they didn't move. What a privilege to see such magnificent birds.

I was told by a Walguru elder that the litoral translation of curlew was screaming woman, and I believe it, as I hear their calls every night. Very common on Magnetic Island , where I live. Nest under the Mango tree in my yard.
