I have had a Scangauge II for about 18 months now. I have it permanently plugged into the Discovery and mounted on the dash.
I bought it so I could identify any error codes etc should they present themselves - and hopefully have the ability to clear them if not "critical".
I have it set on "gauge" and have it displaying Volts, Temp, Turbo Boost, and Engine Load. It is very interesting to see how the vehicle performs while towing and not towing and under different conditions and terrain.
Thankfully I have not had to use it to identify or clear any fault codes as there haven't been any.
I don't see it as a waste of time (or money), despite not having had any faults to identify with the vehicle. I do like having the ability to identify any fault codes and know what the problem is and to then have the ability to clear them and drive on - either as normal or to a service/repair place.

Gundog, have had a Scangauge II for about 3 years now. The transmission on the series 200 Landcruiser is sealed. The Scangauge allows me to keep an eye on the tranny temperature and take action if needed. Also keep and eye on engine temp. The Scangauge pretty much allows you to interrogate all the information available in your vehicle's ECU.
As rockylizard mentioned, it is useful for clearing error codes. I have a performance chip and when the car was still very new, the chip caused some error codes. Now that things have worn in a bit more, rarely see one.
There is a huge thread about Scangauge on the Lancruiser Owner's forum (LCOOL). Plus it is something that you can take with you to the next vehicle. The OBDII interface is universal. A mob in Clarence NSW are the distributors for Australia. You can buy one off the internet on their US site and at times they have deals whereby they will give you a mounting cradle free.
I have velcroed mine on top of the mirror. Some guys have it on the steering column but this tends to obstruct some of the dashboard. If you have time, I strongly suggest you have a look at all the conversation on LCOOL.
Well worth the money IMHO.

I have now put it in the BT50 and like the old American Express card I never leave home without it
Mainly used it in the PK to clear the EGR code as I had it disconnected Why because the air intake temp was way too hot for my liking
Anyone using one of the ScanGauge products.
