Alice springs the humble penny is now 50c to use a toilet in a shopping centre.
Then you have the Woolies complex in Katherine where it is now $1..

Has been 50c for at least 10 years, so the inflation rate isn't too bad

Charging for public dunnies may explain a sight a mate saw up there once.
A lady walking on the footpath over the road from where they were walking suddenly dropped down into a squat and dumped on the pavement.
His wife was annoyed that he found it hilarious as I recall...

If you have ever used a free public toilet in Alice Springs, I bet you only did it once.

I can't remember where now.. but it was up the centre.. there was a lady who took care of the toilets all day and you tipped her before you used the toilets..
she would ask you on the way out if the toilets were clean enough etc..

Just come back from 3 months in Europe, standard procedure over there, price ranges from 50c to 1 Euro [ about $1.40 Aus ] especially in all service stations and Tourist area"s, Lots of changes start over there, and then find there way over here,
Just wait to you see the changes with the Banking system ?? There soon will be NO counters to go up to at all you enter a bank to use a computer ??

Twenty years ago it was £1 to use one of those self cleaning dunnies in London. $1 in Katherine sounds cheap in comparison, did you see any of the educated locals using them whilst you were there. They certainly were in Alice springs to steer clear of their bush friends "hygiene."
