I'm not a member either but I certainly believe in euthanasia 100% and the good Doctor. I downloaded his book some time back. When I get to the stage I don't know what day it is, I'll be pulling the plug. Incidentally, what day is it !!!

Even in those civilised jurisdictions that allow us the right to die, we still have to prove that we are of sound mind when we make the decision. That's the Catch 22 for Alzheimer's and dementia sufferers. In fact I would go even further and allow people who are terminally depressed to end their own lives. As it is now, if a person attempts to commit suicide and fails, they are then committed to a mental institution for their own protection, the reasoning being that survival at any cost is better than death. Of course such an environment only amplifies their depression, with the result that they are likely to remain imprisoned for the rest of their miserable existence.
I have often thought what I would do if I were confronted by a "jumper". Should I attempt to save them from themselves, or should I allow them to execute their free will? ISTM that the best approach would be to engage them in conversation and try to find some solution, or at least show compassion and understanding for their plight. If they really cannot cope with life, then ISTM that I should stand aside, let matters take their course, and pass on any messages or requests to their loved ones.

Howdyeee I think Depression is a totally difference thing , that is a chemical imbalance in there head, and should be treated , !!But!!, like Robyn Williams, treatment did not work, and He committed suicide, I am a firm believer, that we should be able to pull the pin, when we choose, at any stage of the latter days of our life. stay excited Earthlings..... a very excited Billeeeeeee..... Ps. Why should we have to prove to any one , that we are of sound mind, Hehehe, I haven't met any one in my 67 years of being on planet beautiful, that are of sound mind. most of us can hide our peculiarities, and some of us have problems hiding them ,

Yeah, I agree, depression is different. I don't want to live as a vegetable and I don't want to give anyone the responsibility of looking after me. Euthanasia might currently be unlawful in Australia but what I have done is execute a "Living Will" Such a document is legal in South Australia, but I'm not sure about other States or Tassie where I live. The document should be given to a Doctor or Hospital where I am being treated so they are aware of my wishes. Have attached a blank copy...

"Vegetables can't type," I said. My belief is that once you're of no use to yourself or anyone else, death is a legitimate option. I think Billeeeeeee's got a point about being of sound mind hehe. What the hell is sound? The older I get, the more convinced I am that the entire human race is not the full quid.

The comments about being of sound mind are quite valid, that's the reason I made a written "Living Will". You can make it while you are still of sound mind, and in the event you do lose your marbles, at least you have made your wishes known.

A lilving will sounds like a good idea. When my late husband was in hospital, with a brain bleed, I had discussed with the doctors the options and stated that he would not want to live as a vegetable, so no resussication or treatment at all (only fluids). It was all written on his charts. Late that night, another doctor on duty at the time, rang me to say they thought he had pneumonia, and wanted to do an xray, and start antibiotics. I got very angry, and said read the chart - it was not going to change the outcome, so why do it!!!!! He died that night.
We had discussed all of this over the years, after his first heart attack, and both knew the others thoughts on the matter, so I knew I was doing what he wanted. He would have done the same for me.
I will investigate the living will, and I will not ever live as a vegetable, when I can't do for myself, it will be goodbye world!

I also agree with you BG....I have worked too hard at life to end it needlessly...but....once I lose my quality of life, then the "living will" removes any doubt as to my wishes. We have one life....only one, and should never be taken for granted.

I think the current laws make people commit suicide well before they need to.
I know that when my time comes I plan to finish it while I am able to, which requires me to be of sound mind and limb.
I will walk into the extremes of temperature somewhere in Australia with a bottle of scotch and a months supply of medication and die.
This has several problems which I hope will not happen as I hope to never be found.
1. The person who finds the body may suffer ill effects.
2. If there are loved ones they dont get the opportunity to say good bye etc.
3. There could be wasted time looking for you when really you dont want to be found.
Often people commit suicide by driving into a truck or train etc and it is put down as an accident but really it is someone who wishes to end their life and disregards the consequences. I know of several event like this. One ruined the live of a train driver as he lost his job (trains cant go around you) and has suffered depression etc ever since.
There are ways to hasten death when it is required. Excess alcohol and extreme weather conditions means that the end is a lot quicker.
With the good doctors method you can at least hang on while you have your dignity and then finish when YOU are ready.
Had a friend that was kept alive for 5 years with cancer when all she wanted to do was to go peacefully. they even gave her chemo three days before her death and only after she died did they admit that there was no hope many years previously.Destroyed tha family as they thought that the pain she was enduring was to get her cured when in fact it was to fill the offers of the doctors and hospital. One of the reasons I dont trust doctors.
I am like Billeeeeeee just that I am a different type of mad.

Brian, I was in a hospital years ago where patient numbers were down and they deliberately kept me in longer to keep the head count up to try to keep the hospital from being closed.......it was a public (repat) hospital and it ended up being taken over by private owners.

You are 100% right Brian, I have lived with people with depression for many years and they do suffer terribly at times and I think it must be so good for them to be torment free.
I worked on the trains for many years as a fireman and driver and saw many men who were involved in suicides become depressed and a nervous wreck after the event.
I was fortunate that I never was, Some of my mates who went onto the Sydney electric system had 6 and 7 people jump in front of them over the years and it shattered them.
People being allowed to take their own life may not have prevented this but from my observations when they go over the edge nothing will prevent them from taking their own life and it is a shame that they involve other innocent people and maybe shatter another life.
I don't plan on wasting away in a Hospital or mental home waiting for it to happen, I'll do it so no one knows and is hurt by the occasion. I just hope dementia etc doesn't sneak up on me so I cannot make the decision I need to make.
