Any suggestions on which river side to travel on going NE from Wilcannia to Bourke? Better road? Better scenery etc?
Using a near new Kia Sorento. One spare tyre enough?

We have just done the entire run , from north to south, from Walgett to Wentworth , we took the east road ,the surface was good , many narrow cattle grids , very little traffic , actually we did 300 klms ,and never saw one vehicle . look out for roos ,and emus. You will be fine as long as it does not rainout there. Enjoy your trip.

Drove both sides in an Austin 1800 in the mid 70s, so I don't expect you will have a problem.
Driven the east side more recently.
Just don't be out there if it rains, even a little bit. There are areas of black soil road and you will go no where until it is dry.

Hi Bart, and welcome. We did the Darling River Run back in 2009, Holden Jackaroo towing an off road camper trailer. Travelled on the south eastern track. As the Roamer says, there are many cattle grids, and we noticed that at every grid, the condition of the road changed. But we had no issues. The Darling River was dry, and at one point, we walked across. Since then the river has been in flood, and the road cut, I think in 2011.

We travelled it in June and came along the eastern side. We were towing a Vista Crossover and found it a good dirt road with not a great deal of traffic.

Got friends outside of menindee, and used to travel the pooncarie road regularly, (Wentworth-Menindee) and never had any problems with a multitude of different vehicles towing and not.
The menindee to wilcannia road is also a excellent road, but remember even a little rain will have you in the table drain bogged. i have been stationary in the middle of the road and slid sideways into the drain.

Got caught on the track in the early seventies with four of us in an xc falcon wagon when it rained...we were able to turn the car on the spot by getting out and spinning it 360 degrees in situ!Yeh it can get pretty slippery!
