Hi.. Basic question from a couple of young newbies... We have an olympic 3000 that we recently purchased. Handover explained how to turn on hot water (gas valve under cupboard & switch above stove ) but no one said whether to turn on and leave it on... Or turn it off at night when not using. This is first van where we have had hot water and shower set up.. Always had to boil the kettle. Any advice would be great :)

Welcome to the gang Linda and Pickles, enjoy here and out in the playground.
With my limited knowledge of your hot water system I would say you only turn it on in time to heat for use. So turning it off over night would be the way to go. Just remember to turn it back on again in the morning etc. I stand corrected of course.
I have only just ordered a new Den and getting a continous hot water system installed. It will fire up as tap is turned on. Time will tell if it is a good system or not.

Thanks Doug..I will play safe and turn off Loving the playground so far... Have only just scratched the surface. Can't see the kids getting an inheritance at this rate lol.

I only start the gas hot water when required. turn on 15 min before shower.

Doug is spot on,
We turn ours on a half hour before we need it and turn it off after we have done all the hot water things.
turn it back on in the morning.
we think it saves gas that way and means the noise of it starting up will not disturb you during the night.

We only turn ours on to have showers - about 15 minutes gives plenty of hot water. For other hot water (washing up etc) we boil a kettle. It seems to be much more economical that way.

Ditto to Oz Gypsy. However, currently we have are parked up on Private property for a while so extra long hose is sitting in the sun. No need for us to turn on gas to heat water, in fact, we have to turn the tap handle to HOT to get cooler water!

As I don't know your HW system, I can only assume you have gas bottles and a shut off valve on the bottles or cylinders whatever you want to call them, and a shut off valve for the gas cooker, if you have one, and the hot water. The switch is probably the igniter to light the gas.
What I do, and I have a Motor Home, is when parked for the night, turn on the gas cylinder valves. You can then light your cooker and/or hot water as required. When you are finished with the hot water, turn off the igniter switch. It should have a red light beside the switch, which will go out after the gas ignites.
When I move on, I only turn off the valves on the cylinder/s leaving the hot water and gas cooker valves open.
As I mentioned, this is what I do. Everyone will have their own ideas, so it's really up to you how you handle this.
