We're looking for a free camp at Emerald in Q/L. We have to get some work done of the ute in Emerald so we have to stay there and a number of people we've spoken to discouraged us from staying at the bridge so we're looking for alternatives if there are any.

I certainly would take the advice given to you by those people
The "bridge" is definitely not a very pleasant place to stay. Perhaps if you arrived mid-afternoon and left early the next morning - and could stand the noise of highway traffic.
I have passed it many times and it is one of those 'free-camps' I cannot understand why anyone stays at. This time of year it will be chocker-block full too.
Here are a couple of grabs from Google to give you an idea. People even camp up on the grassy hill beyond the bitumen section ... and it all gets full.
I am not aware of any 'nearby' camps nearby to Emerald. When I needed some work on my vehicle back in 2009, I stayed in the van park in Opal Street. Not bad value - and heaps better than the "bridge".
We had to wait up in Emerald for new tyres & so we just went down into the industrial area & found a spot down there for a couple of nights. no one bothered us & it was quiet.

It is definitely something to consider kandagal ... but a bit difficult to "camp" in an industrial area with a van - while the "ute" is getting "some work done".
D&D's van =
Just a bit conspicuous. I could be wrong but a van there for a "couple of days/nights" would look more 'out of place' than a bus.

I am happy to camp under the bridge at Emerald and have done several times, I found that the road noise was not excessive and only the odd train ran over the bridge.
One good part of camping under the bridge is the closeness of the shopping centre, with the town just behind, it by the roundabout as you enter the site. Easy walking distance.
Another good point is the botanical gardens by the river on the other side of the bridge and again easy walking distance.
I have more tolerance than most when it comes to free camping and look for the positives where they exist.
We stayed under the bridge back in April I think it was. Were there for 3 nights and in that time I had a solar panel fitted to the roof. He came to the site and fitted it there. A nice walk to the shops and a potato food caravan at the entrance.
Found no problem with noise, but you should get there early as it is very popular. The botanical gardens are lovely for a stroll.
