We are in Winton Qld ATM,... seems like a nice place, friendly people. But I feel so sorry for the people of Winton, their water supply comes from a bore and smells of Sulphur... they say the smell dissipates, and the residents probably get used to it, but Yuck! I reckon its the worst we've tasted.
As we have travelled in central Australia and in Western Australia we have tasted some pretty awful water, and we are always choosy about what water we put in the tank. Its interesting that sometimes different towns draw from the same aquifer but their water quality varies considerably.
Which was the worst water others have tasted, and where was the best?

Winton must have changed since I was last there. Their water was definitely 'bore' water, but was not too bad. A local told me to fill a jug or container of water each morning and leave it on the bench. The smell dissipated fairly quickly and then it was quite OK ... bit hard to do that if you needed to fill the van's water tank.
However, the water at Quilpie was horrendous and I think the worst I have encountered. There seemed to be nothing to help. I used to almost asphyxiate in the showers at the van park.
I used the water in the van's tanks for my 2 day stay there and re-filled at the next location.
It was after staying there I bought and installed an external filter to filter all water before it got into the van.

Eromanga. The shower water felt oily. So much gas comes out of the water tap that it can sometimes be lit.

The best water - possibly Hamilton Channels, between Winton and Boulia - and the worst - Boulia, also pretty crook at Yowah!

Biggenden has the worst water, when the water tank ran out, I would buy bottled water as the town water was impossible to drink.
Have to agree with Jules for best water that I can think of would have to be Hamilton Channels.

I must agree Jules. I camped at Hamilton Channels/old hotel site (right out the back near the fence) for 4 days ... that water was so good - better than most cities I reckon.
I didn't think Boulia was too bad - neither Yowah ... I wonder if some of these bores change their 'qualities' from time to time dependent on the 'minerals' they carry.

I have problems with some water medically so we carry a water distiller and process our own water. You would be surprised at what comes out of most outback water and a lot of main town supplies. Very disgusting at times.

I found the water at Banka Banka was really good, filled up twice there on the way up and the way back to Kununurra from QLD but the best drinking water was at Underra Lava caves from the roof collected water they had at the restaurant , really nice water, would have liked to have filled my tanks there!
Agree the bore water at Quilpie was pretty bad, made the mistake of drinking from the tap , but only once !!!!!

(I expect tastes and other profiles etc when geographically removed from places that can treat/condition their supply adequately, but no idea why a capital city can call such swill 'potable' ).

I have been lucky so far but I have used a in-line charcoal filter at all times so might be why. I will change to a two filter system when I get the new den though.

Had some good ones, some bad ones but probably Julia Creek would be one of the best. Don't see anything wrong with Karratha water either. Gateway Caravan Park out of Broome also had good water.

Speaking of filling the water tanks at these spots my plans are to have a LR tug and carry 2000 l of water...
I've never had an issue filling the 160l tank but is 2000l a bit rude to fill at a servo for example?

We are upgrading to a Twin Cab Isuzu tray to tow a monster van so we can stay out for months.
The truck will have spare space and weight capacity so should be able to cary 2 x 1000l water boxes.
I'm now not sure where one can fill that much water without being anti social.

nothing wrong with Coopers, i'll give one of Doug's saying, ( i'll tell you this for nothing ) when you get a Coopers Green( thats pale ale ) twist the bottle slowly upside down before you knock the top off then the sediment gets mixed in. so simple won of the great beers.

nothing wrong with Coopers, i'll give one of Doug's saying, ( i'll tell you this for nothing ) when you get a Coopers Green( thats pale ale ) twist the bottle slowly upside down before you knock the top off then the sediment gets mixed in. so simple
