An uncle of mine is classed as the first casualty of the Gallipoli campaign although he actually died of meningitis when the first lot of troops arrived in Egypt. He has a special tomb in Alexandria. Because of his death his father (my grandfather) then signed up & went off to Gallipoli. He became ill while there & the medics decided he had appendicitis so they put him on a ship & sent him to England. There the doctors had a good look at him & they decided he also had OLD age. So he was sent back to Oz & his discharge papers read - old age & debility. He had put his age down by many years to enlist leaving his wife behind with 8 children to rear on her own. I never met the man but he must have been a character as he fathered 3 more children (in his old age) when he returned. Of course he was Irish so that may explain some of it!!! My father had an Irish accent.
