we have just been to Townsville and are going back next year. Which is the best and closest caravan park to stay at. The one we stayed at was ok but out near the raaf base and noisy and too far out of town

Rose Bay CVP is the closest and really nice BUT you can't book sites only cabins. You rock up early and hope for the best.
The one near the show grounds is close to the CBD. Sorry, but can't remember names and my book is put away for my departure from Townsville in a couple of hours.
May I suggest you google CVP in Townsvillle or ask Wikicamps. All are listed andvwhere. There are three close to the CBD.

We had a quick look around at a few CPs for somewhere to stay when we sell our house in Townsville.
We will probably stay at the Range CP on Herveys Range Road. It is an over 50s park and has no pool or jumping castle etc and is only a few kilometres from Willows Shopping Centre.
Dawn at the office was very friendly and helpful and offered to give us a tour around the park when we called in for a look. Quoted $35/night or $235/week.
Cheers

We stayed at Rose Bay CVP Doug for a few weeks and found it very convenient too, and being on the foreshore has nice walks along the beachfront nature strip. I think it had a bus stop out the front too from memory.

We have stayed at the CP at the showgrounds - may be called Town and Country - it is just off Ingham Road, near the Castletown shopping centre (walking distance), bus in Ingham Rd can take you into town - very central, not flash, but amenities are very clean - managers are friendly. Reasonably priced as well -think we paid $33 last year.

We were in Townsville June this year. For the first 10 days we stopped at the Seventh Day Riverside Convention Centre in Aitkenvale. For $30 per night for water, power and shade it was excellent. The amenities were nit flash but clean. There were a couple of restrictions such as no smoking or alcohol but we respected their rules. I believe within your van confine it wouls not be an issue. Very conveniently located, walking distance to Stockland Plaza. But because these facilities are used for school camps, it is not available during certain times of the year. That is why we had to relocate for the last few days of our holiday to The Lakes Caravan Park opposite Castletown Shopping Centre. Another convenient location. However for $45 per night for a powered site, there was NO dump point in the park. It lacked maintenance and the roads full of potholes. Each site has an ensuite whethere you want it or not. Garbage bins emptied twice weekly only. We will definitely be returning to the Riverside Convention Centre along with regulars that stay there each year.

All the parks mentioned are good Wendy, I only mentioned a couple as you said the one you were at was too far out. I assume that was Coral Coast, if so I agree with the noise etc. I must admit though I was a big kid when the Army awas flying around in their helicopters and Air Force in their Hornet Jets.
Black River is another good park but way out of town.

hi, we have just returned from Townsville and always stay at Magnetic Gateway caravan park. if you get on the sites at the rear of the park backs on to the creek, very quiet . sites 104 through to 110 are excellent. close to the ammenities . the road works make it a little difficult to access but not a problem. clean showers and toilets in 2 lge blocks. hope this helps;

The Lakes Caravan Park is fairly central. I think all sites are ensuite ones, so it is not the cheapest. The sites towards the back of the park, against the fence, are really nice because they give an outlook over the lakes. But you might have to book a fair way ahead to get one of those. Was within walking distance of a big shopping centre, whose name I can't remember! Was a mix of permaenets and tourists, but very pleasant.

With family in Townsville, we are always up that way, and we also lived there for many years - Pete was in the Army there for most of his twenty years too. We always stay at Coral Coast and find it a great park - for our needs, it is very convenient, and yes at times the planes can be a tad loud, but hey, I guess we were used to living under the flight path anyway, and they don't bother us, however each to his own. we have also stayed at The Lakes, and feel that as we have a van with an en-suite on board, to have to pay for an en-suite site is a bit hexi!!

Agree after 30 years in the RAAF and living under flight paths for most of that the noise doesn't present a problem to us . There must be tropical exercises on at the moment as the base is normally not all that active. They are in Darwin and Katherine at the moment so if you want noise Katherine in the epi -center for noise . I normally stay at the Coral Coast when in Townsville
