What do others think about having an annual The Grey Nomads Anniversary Birthday?
Jules on another thread said this was the first forum member, are there any original group still on the forum? See;
Jules47 said this was the first GN member;
"A guy called "keithie" - 17 February, 2005 - never posted unfortunately!!! Don't think he has been on for a number of years either - shame!!!!"
So maybe Cindy can verify the date the forum (as opposed to the website) came into existence for the "Birthday"....

What do you mean by "original group?" Members did not join in a group on the first few days. There was a bit of a flurry at first and then the went quiet. If you look at this page you will see it took over 2 years to fill the page with messages.
I joined early and then gave up looking due to the lack of activity. I returned in 209 and the activity was sufficient to attract my attention and I have been around since. At the time someone (was it Cindy) contacted many members and the forum took off with a number of us returning.
The 10th anniversary comes up next year. There may be some point in making something of the anniversary. See what response we get.

I wasn't around then Peter, by original group I meant those that first joined or started posting etc, looks like March 2005 when people first joined although many never posted. That page you linked was in 2012, some 7 years later ? From when I first joined (with a different user name) later the most prolific poster then was Dave 06. Having a forum birthday was just an idea for thought to add a bit more interest to the forum. 10th in March 2015 or thereabouts sounds like a good starting point. Perhaps it could be added to the "Birthday" list to remind members and a post just before the time.
I have sent a pm to Cindy for her input perhaps she could suggest a date etc. I'm not sure when the website itself started though.

Maybe that link opens differently depending on how you set your preferences up. My settings are for "Comments Per Page (Enter 0 to use forum default) - 0" and "Topics Per Page (Enter 0 to use forum default) - 40." My link above takes me to a page listing 27 topics. The earliest is 20:57 Feb 28, 2005 and the latest is 20:25 Jun 13, 2007. That is not much activity for the General Forum over a period of around 2 years 4 months. Presently that forum has 40 topics in less than 2 days.
When I open the List All Users using the Members Since sort order I get a listing of 25 members. The first one is on 19:00 Feb 17, 2005 and the last is 11:53 Apr 28, 2005. The next 25 took from that day till 18:34 Oct 15, 2005 to register. So it took 2 months to recruit the first 25 and 6 months for the next 25. It took 12 months to recruit the first 72 members. The first member is probably a dummy used to set the forum up, a possible reason for no posts from him.

Thanks Peter,
So based on what you have said 17th February 2005 (albeit possibly a dummy one, but used to activate the forum) would be the best date to use for the Forum Birthday?????

I think Cindy is the one to announce the day it went on line. The forum would have been tested by her before she actually advertised that it was officially on line.

Agree PeterD, I'm sure Cindy has read this thread and more than likely respond after some thought and maybe homework.
The masses have put the suggestion forward now the creator can decide for or against.

Hi everybody.
Sorry for not replying earlier. I think it’s a great idea to have a birthday celebration for the forum. It’s a bit frightening that it will be 10 years though! We actually started the website and the forum at exactly the same time although, as some of you will remember, it took a while for things to really take off. It is amazing to see how much we have grown since our humble beginnings and I reckon a decade of fun on the ‘friendly forum’ is a very acceptable reason to get some Champagne corks popping. It looks like February 17, 2005, was the day we were ‘born’ ,and so I hereby officially declare February 17, 2015, to be the day for our 10th birthday celebrations. Hooray! We’ll make that the starting point and perhaps we can think over the weeks and months ahead about the best – and most fun - ways we can celebrate the special day. Please let me know if you’ve got any ideas. Oh, and if anyone fancies celebrating a little bit early, as well … please go right ahead!
