I think there are two as one rotten smell started to wane and the smell came back stronger.
We live in an old area where there is a lot of pulling down old houses/sheds etc to build new ones. Each year I stick my head up in the manhole and throw some rat baits around, especially in hard to get at spots etc. The beams are very low and no space for me to get up there, shone a torch around but can't see anything.
An ex pest control friend said they sometimes fall down crevices, between walls, or under insulation etc and it is very difficult to find them even if you do get up, his advice, just live with it until the smell goes. He said it is still a good idea to throw baits around each year as if you don't you will end up with a lot more up there, chewing wires etc.
Suffice to say the place "Pongs" like a dead Wombat (ooops....who said that). Using a lot of Glen 20 and nil odor in the house in the meantime.

Why not put a Python up there. Lots of houses have them in ceilings over here.

We used to have a python in our ceiling space when we lived in Cairns. No worries. He was happy & so were we.

I think you are right about the cause, our area used to be Cow paddocks about twenty years ago, now it's fully devolped with up to four units on a normal house block,
As a result we have had a Rat problem for the last few years, and you're right, " Boy " do they Pong in the ceiling, and they also make a din when the fall down between the double brick walls, makes us wonder how big some of these mongrels are, could swear they wear boots sometimes.
I agree, the smell of their passing can be really high for a few days, and like you I also chuck bags of bait into the ceiling every few months, that keeps them under control.
Last Summer our evaporative air conditioner went on the blink, the result after a good couple of hours searching by the "Tech" was the Hard wired remote wires were chewed through by those flamin Rats.
I guess as long as they keep knocking down old homes and keep putting up these new 6x4 units, we will continue to have Rats.

Living in the sticks, there will be bush rats and mice. We have one of those electronic sonic buzzers up in the roof, and may I say it works a treat, have not had any more problems with pesky rodents.

Our local Hardware store gave us good advice for setting the rat traps in our roof space.
It was to screw the trap to a beam to prevent the rat/mouse from taking off and falling down the cavities.
It has saved us much anguish as should we forget to do a check and the smell starts, we can at least get up there and remove the offending carcase.

I'm with Bryan, sorry, no any snake in the roof or close proximity to me, not a snake fan is this little black duck and I tell you that for free.

Using baits in your ceiling (or car) leads to a horrible smelly outcome, the don't just "go away to die" they get revenge by dying where their bodies will smell you out of your house (car)
If not a snake, you might think about getting a cat Vic?

How about some nose pegs Mate, you don't have to feed them. You can also get an electronic device that sends them scurrying out and keeps them away. Just ask at Bunnings and they should be able to help.

I was talking to a neighbour once over the fence, a rat ran right along the fence in front of our noses, then the cheeky rat did a u turn and ran back in front of us again.......big one too!

Sorry Vic 41, I should have called the device as Ultrasonic Pest Deterrent or Repellent. You can purchase them at any Dick Smith stores, I believe that Bunnings stores stock them as well.

We generally use smoked cheddar cheese - that is cubes of cheese, held over a match with tweezers to slightly melt the surface and leave a smoky surface and it also removes my scent as well.
