We are about to go on a six week tour with our van. I thought we might stay at some show grounds on the way but my husband says he read somewhere that you can only stay there if you are in a group and are actually involved with the show. Can anyone tell me?

Annie, I have stayed in a couple of showgrounds SOLO with no problem, infact I will look for a showground before a CVP in future.
Most don't allow you to stay when the show or similar event is on, for obvious reasons but I have heard of a couple that will put you down the back out the way.
Edit....Sorry Annie I didn't notice you were a newbie so welcome to the gang, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Have to agree with Dougwe, definitely showground before CVP, not all SHOWGROUNDS let you stay but those that do generally offer good value. And yes, sometimes we are the only ones there.

Hi Annie and I'll add my welcome to the Forum.. We don't know which way you are heading but suggest you invest in the Bible, Camps 7. It will give you information all along the route you intend to travel, and free camps. Some Caravan Parks and Showgrounds are included. I note you are in Brisbane (My old home town) and this is some info on Showgrounds I've compiled for your nearby area:
There are 6 showgrounds within the Moreton Bay Region located at Caboolture, Dayboro, Lawnton, Redcliffe, Samford and Woodford.
For camping enquiries, please see the relevant contact details as follows:
Redcliffe Showground: Casual camping is not permitted at the Redcliffe showground. Council only allows camper van/caravan camping at the showground under the following criteria:
No tent camping is permitted;
Groups of caravan club members up to a maximum of 1 week in any 6 month period;
Individual camper van/caravan's exceeding 30 feet in length are permitted to camp for periods not exceeding 1 week in a 6 month period. (Note: They must have already confirmed that there are no vacancies at local caravan parks first);
Individual camper van/caravan's less than 30 feet are not permitted;
Requests to hold events at the showground will be assessed on a case by case basis.
People associated with the Redcliffe show are permitted to camp at the showground 1 week prior and 2 weeks following the annual show (i.e. total of 3 weeks);
People associated with an event being staged at the showground, and/or other major events within the Redcliffe area, for the duration of the event and a maximum of 1 day prior to and after the event;

Welcome to the Great Aussie experience Annie.
If you have a smartphone look for the Application "Wikicamps"; cost about $5 to download but will show you all the options wherever you are in Oz. A major plus is that users comment on the venues so you get a good idea what to expect.
We've just come back from 7000KLM 2 month round trip Brisbane to South Australia and back and found the App invaluable.. Camps 7 is also very good BTW. Many of us use both.

If you are anywhere near Mareeba stay at the Rodeo Show Grounds. Usually quite a few caravanners. Water & electricity and good ablutions. Plenty of grass and dogs okay. A few Kms out of town but only $15 a night a couple of years ago (oops 2010) when we stayed there. You can drive to Cairns for the day or Port Douglas from there. Only time you can't stay is when the Rodeo is on.
Cheers

There are a lot of showgrounds in QlLD towns that allow overnight stays and longer for a very reasonable price.

Hi, Welcome to the playground.
We look to see if there is a showgrounds now.
Maleny showgrounds and Woodford showgrounds and Lawnton showgrounds (nth. Brisbane) are all good.
I like them because you can spread out and the grass is green.
Good luck

Thank you everyone for all your helpful information. Yes I did download the Wiki Camp Ap and have found it very good. Well worth the few dollars to download as it shows everything you need to know as well as pictures and comments from other travelers. Heading out to Dirranbandi so see where I spent my early years on a sheep station. Hopefully they will allow me onto the property to see how things have changed. Thanks again for your help.

The only thing we don't like about showgrounds is all the people who walk past the caravans can make you feel a bit insecure. Its a public place and they have a right to use the area for jogging, dog-walking, footy training, whatever. So lock everything away. In free camps you hardly ever get that, and in caravan parks even less.
