Ch7 news here in Darwin last night ( which appears to be Melbourne news) states that Cobar,NSW is now complaining of the amount of Caravaners/motor homes that are parked throught the town every night & the council is going to investergate the effect to local business; or should that have said C/P.

There is an extensive report on another forum.
The usual CP owners whinge. They want all free parks within 50kms of Cobar closed.
Council are considering it.

I didn't see the article, but let me make a couple of guesses. Could it be that the local c/p is council owned. And surely the shops aren't wanting to hunt away tourist dollars. May I be so bold to predict that eventually they will mandate against stopping anywhere but c/p's, because the almighty dollar does rule the new world after all.

I had a read of the article when it first appeared. The CP is council owned but is leased to a management company who have made some improvements to the park and then jacked up the price from $25 to $35 a night.
We have stayed there a few times but won't bother in future. The CP is complaining about losing business to free camps in and around the town. I am not surprised by this.
There is no way a CP will ever herd me in to their establishment if I don't want to go. As far as I can remember this is still a free country and we still have freedom of choice.

Caravan parks can't cope with the numbers now, so by closing rest areas just where do they think we will all go?
Its always the bloody C/P , maybe they should do a survey of all the other business of the town for their opinion.
If you cant stop near by then no spend money in the town, very simple.,
These councils should take the time to also survey the tourists as to what we need/want.
We can all see it but they cant.

Unfortunately caravanners/motorhomers who free camp are quite often their own worst enemy.
In this case a camper was discharging their grey water into a reservoir.
Also you only have to read this forum to find many instances of people blatantly disregarding the posted time limits for stopping at free camp locations. They will be the first to whinge when these locations are closed to camping due to their selfishness in overstaying the posted time limits.

Thread started on another Forum re the Charleville CP now operating a Bush Camp 2 Km from town. Everyone wins. Someone obviously is finally able to think outside the square.

Had a miserable stop over at Cobar CP on one trip.
There was a Truck Stop or Depot over the road & the bloody noise from their truck engines or freezer motors running almost constantly was extremely annoying.
We always made sure that we were as far away from them as possible with lots of structure between us on future stops.
Would you believe, I purchased a plastic soap tray from the local hardware shop there and it only lasted 7 years! Would have cost me as much as 3 or 4 dollars. I actually brought a replacement one at the same place. The guy behind the counter said 'must have been cheap Jap stuff. This one is quality Chinese made'. No refund though.

We have seen many free camps absolutely jam-packed overnight and most people move on the next morning... leaving their patch of muddy ground where they let their drains flow out.
But chatting to folks (as you do!) we met many who say they are staying "another week", or have "been there a fair while" in a 24 hour stop!
As you say P C... they will be the first to complain.

Agree Gerty,, one of our favourite members of GN was bragging about overstaying Saunders Beach in QLD by a week last year and we were close by waiting to to get in,,, didn't line up at 7AM like others so missed out. One day we will meet face to face and he will be suitably chastised.
Yep saw some grey water at Cobar lake going straight into lake. They are out there and we are all associated with them, in the view of many locals.

If you are referring to whom I think you are Baz, he also stopped for over 2 weeks at the Babinda 48 hour stop.

Yep, he worked around the ranger's visits to overstay and he is still doing the same thing as he mentioned earlier this week.

There are a lot of people that utilise the 4/5 areas there, play cat & mouse with the rangers.
Watched a few leave one morning for a few hrs then return to the same spot.

Those who overstay the limits in free camp places are not smart, just selfish - because they give plenty of ammunition to those who want to close such places down.
On the one hand, you have the overseas backpackers in their Wicked units, being irresponsible. The overstayers are no better. In the middle, you have those who do the right things but will be penalised by the actions of those other two groups.
