Have to commend the WA government on their rest stops - we have found them wonderful - toilets, plenty of big rubbish bins, and good dump points!!!! The one we are at presently, has TWO dump spots!!! This is at De Grey River - just above Port Hedland.
This is a very large area, with some spots right on the riverbank, and several other spots close to the river as well - though very shady with trees - not good for solar.
We have a good, fairly level spot - though a bit dusty - we have water views from our elevated position, and get to watch the entertainment as people come in and try to get on to the river bank, or as close as they can - had one this afternoon, we thought was going to tip over - but he managed to get out - trying to put a 30ft van into a 20ft site!!!!!

We were there in August 2010, beautiful spot. There must have been 30 vans or so scattered about the bush lining the river, all nicely tucked away in secluded spots. WA certainly has got some fantastic rest stops, we had many a happy hour with other like minded travellers. Most of the rest stops were graded out sections and roadways tucked into the bush some even had covered shelters for happy hours. Make the most of it and have a great time there is so very much to see and enjoy over there.
Below is one picture of our van at De Gray the other two are of the Robe river rest stop.
Jules - have to agree re the rest stops - we stayed at De Greys as well. We noticed that all the rest stops are cleaned at least once a day by someone in a truck - clean the toilets and empty the garbage bins. Bogans still try and ruin it with toilet paper holders ripped off walls and door locks jemmied off.
Too bad some of the caravan parks don't pick their game up - we've been mainly in parks for the last 3 weeks and found all to be over $40 per night for a pokey spot, leaky showers, cracked toilet pedestals and busted locks on toilet doors. Worst was the council run one at Onslow - $45 per nite. Old Onslow is great for free camping and great catfish in the river.
Best we've had is where we are now at the Wintersun in Carnarvon - $228 for 7 nights with amenities you could eat your dinner off. They even water the roadfs twice a day and really seem to care.

They have flash floods up there Jules, so anyone too close to the river like those you mentioned are taking a risk.
Here is a link to the WA Rest Stops for anyone who wants them;
Hako, I have also camped on the river at old Onslow (Ashburton River), threw a hand line in and went to bed, woke up in the morning and went to pull my line in and I had a huge catfish on the other end......had it for breakfast!

I know its hard to get a signal in some places and maybe you are too busy sight seeing and that is what you are in WA for, enjoy your trip, BUT don't get down too low to Perth we are getting some really cold wet weather.

Gday Jules, stayed at the De grey for 10 days last mth. we always go right to the end by the rail bridge on the river bank, great spot! is the old ''strange'' lady still in the area?? no vehicle, jus sleeps wherever,,she put the ''recipe'' books in the toilets when we were there, are they still there?.... lol..................
we stayed there overnight in May 2013 - was drizzling when we went to bed and woke at daylight with water everywhere. We were the first up the track which was very slippery. Some vans were surrounded by water and would have had a difficult time getting out as the track would have quickly deteriorated. But a lovely spot with water views. Saw the river run bank to bank in July - an amazing site with very unseasonal rain. We spent 6.5 mths at Pardoo Station - just down the road.

I saw them but I had the nulla lymphs, so couldn't do anything about it.....still a sight for fading eyes though
Back on Topic, I have seen a flash flood up north, sunny sky with no sign of rain and a wall of water came down the creek bed as high as and spilling over the bank out of nowhere, no warning or anything.
Apparently if it rains heavily many kms away that is what happens.
Anyone camped in dry creek beds or too near the banks can be at risk.

Thanks for all the replies - De Grey River is a terrific spot - reckon we had arund 60 or so travellers in there some nights - was quite amusing watching some of them try to get into some tight spots - one soon learned that you can't fit a 30ft van into a 20ft spot!!!!! Lost some of his tail end trying though!!
Not ignoring emails guys - just really had limited reception - De Grey has free wi fi hot spot - but you only get an hour, and after getting on to family, facebook and reading here - not a lot of time left - will try and get onto it soon - sitting at a rest stop on the highway in Port Hedland before heading out to Marble Bar for a few days!!! Please forgive me!!!

Hello friends, Lynne & I are currently at Cleaverville camp, about 50km north of Karratha Wa, been here 4 weeks now and will stay another six weeks I reckon. While it is 6degrees at home and 25 here it is a no brainer.
On the way up here we overnighted at Robe River campsite and there is now free wifi there too. I was gobsmacked.

Hi Neil,
Love to say it's good to see you back on GN again but I don't tell lies
Sounds like you got lost, last I heard you were heading east towards SA, and stay where you are for the time being or all three of you will freeze to death.

Not "lost", we were heading across the Nullarbor when I saw two delightful nubile nymphs who were hitchhiking heading West. They said they had scored a job washing camper vans for some dude that insisted that clothing was 'optional'. Of course I had to help them with a lift. So, here I am back in WA.
