Not sure if this should be here in technical or digress, but here goes.
I bought myself a new camera, great pics it is taking and I am having fun trying different settings etc. I am able to connect it to my phone and IPad, I just don't know how. It is a Nikon D5300.
I have looked at the tutorials on Youtube, but they are not clear. The instructions in the manual are also not clear. Of course this could be me. I tend to learn better by being shown.
So my question, has anybody had success in doing this with their camera? Or could it be that I am not in a strong enough Wifi area to connect, although I do seem to have full coverage. Or is it one of those things they advertise but really does not work anyway?
I might have to wait til I get to a larger town and go into a camera shop and have them show me. Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

You can get a fitting to plug in the side of you iPad with a USB connection (I think it's called a camera/photo kit) and you should have got a lead with the camera that plugs into your Laptop that plugs into the iPad adaptor. If all fails just download to your laptop and email the ones you want on your iPad to yourself and open on your iPad and download there. Bit of mucking around but works for me and I keep all my pics on my Laptop that way.

Gday...
Download and save the attached *.PDF file - it is the complete user manual for your camera.
I suppose, my feedback re your question is .... What are you trying to achieve? (As I'm not entirely sure I understand)
Are you trying to save your pictures from your camera onto your iPad?
Are you trying to send your pictures somewhere? (Ie: email / blog?)
If you are trying to save the pictures from your camera onto your iPad, then "yes", you will a cable that plugs into your camera and has the correct pin/plug into your iPad. Most cameras have a standard USB cable included that fits into your camera and unfortunately, the other end may not plug straight into your iPad. So, you may need to buy an adaptor from a computer store that will join the two USB ends (1 from the camera cable and the other from your iPad). Now ... If you manage this, you will need to be mindful of your storage capacity of your iPad (remember that iPads are not like your traditional PCs with ability to store massive file sizes etc)
If you are trying to send them somewhere via the internet, yes then you will need wifi. This presents it's own set of headaches as the data rich pictures you will be taking will chew up your internet data allowance VERY quickly, so be careful. I cannot see why you would need to use wifi from your camera to your iPad (could be a new feature ...)? there is software available that shrinks the data size of pictures whilst keeping the integrity of the image intact which is ideal for sending pics via email etc, but this software is not compatible (to my knowledge) for iPad, so you will need a laptop for this (not sure if you have a PC/laptop?)
OK, if you want to store your pictures from off your camera then I suggest you will need a laptop and/external hard drive to save, edit and use your pictures when ever you want. Otherwise, I'm sure your camera has either an internal storage capacity and / or the ability to use a SD card ( a small data storage card) which is more likely. These SD cards are great as you can have multiple of them but you cannot use them with an iPad (easily that is!) so viewing your masterpieces without either using your camera (I gather it would have a small digital screen?) would not be doing them justice without viewing them on a computer.
Apologies for the information overload, but it is important that you know what you want to do and then see what the technology available can do to achieve this, if you let the technology push you around, then you will need to be guided by what it is built for.
Happy to help if needed and I hope this helps.
Cheers - Weg

Thanks guys. I will try again to follow the instructions. I do have the laptop connection Doug, and have used that one. Did not even think of emailing them to myself.
John, will try again from the Manual. See how I go and if all else fails will just have to wait until i reach a larger town and see if there is a camera shop somewhere that might help me.

Hi Weg, hmm, the camera has a Wifi feature that should when set up send my pics straight to my Ipad or phone. I just cannot work out how to get it to set up properly. Silly me though did not even think of the data usage.
I have the cable to my laptop and will look at getting the connection for the IPad. Golly there is always something else. The joys of technology.
Thank you for your detailed reply though.
Cheers Sharon.

I forgot to mention Sharon that because all my images are saved to the Laptop I firstly copy the image/s and save to a seperate folder, then reduce the copy file size of the image/s to about 25-30% I email to myself first, then send. That way you are using less data.
Images on a computer or similar don't need high res really. Good to have that in the original file though if you ever want to print a image for any reason. I only have 5gb Data per month and find it plenty. Works for me anyway.
You don't have to get the iPad adaptor from a camera shop, they are also in many places i product are sold.

Ok I can stop panicking now, I have not idea how I did it, but finally the camera and phone were talking, the cloud then took them to my IPad. Pheww, well we will see if I can do it again at a later date.
So here are few pics that I took around Gulgong, with the new camera.
All good Doug, I was thinking that the WiFi thing was a myth.
Another thought..
Using wifi to 'send' your photos means you are using the internet (I assume), so I'd suggest you check if you can use a 'Transfer' app on your Ipad to suck the photos across from your phone without sending them to yourself via the net. I use it to transfer my files from the iPad to my Windows computer.

Wow! A Nikon D5300. How flash is that? I have the D3100 DSLR entry level model and I thought that was pretty flash. You should have a ball with that camera, Sharon, especially after learning a bit about it and what it can do.

One tip that has been missed is, as soon as you have your pics on your computer SAVE THEM TO A CD OR DVD DISK, OR A FLASH MEM STICK then you have the originals on disk in case your computer goes to sleep and you cannot get your computer back again, ALL of your picture's are gone, but with the cd/dvd back up you can get your pics back.
BTW there is a new Nikon coming out this month, the Nikon D810 @ $3289.00 if you want one or two.
Nikon D800 owner.

Correct, I do use PB BUT in the past there have been a few web site's that have closed most will let you know so you can get your pics back, all well and good again BUT most of those site inc PB will limit the size of your pics, and in most cases will resize them to fit their policy, when you get your pics back IF they tell you they are closing you do NOT get your original quality back again unless you have them on CD/DVD at home.
Another point is if you are using .JPG and most do your pics quality degrades every time you copy and paste, try it with a pic you really don't want and keep recopying and pasting the same pic then have a look at the quality after about 20 times of doing that and see what you end up with.
The only way to keep the quality is to put them on CD/DVD or as I do take your pics in RAW format (in Nokin's case NEF) I have two card's in my camera and when I press the button to take a shot it takes two pics one in JPG the other in RAW.

I take all my pics in high quality .jpg but I never take pics in the raw. Wombat mate, you could get into trouble doing that.
I also have the original on my laptop and a back up on a portable hard drive. I always copy a pic first then save in a seperate file to post or email. I don't touch the original.
That is all still on topic. I think.

Yes first time ever all on topic well sort of, beware backups of any kind can fail, I like to take pics in .RAW but for some strange reason Mrs W get's excited.
