[spoiler] I have recently purchased a 2007 Jayco Pop Top. Am thinking about painting the roof top and hence am wondering ... having recently ad all joins, etc resealed.
1. Is this a wise action? 2. What paint should I use ... Oil based/Water based ?

I would suggest you speak to a specialised paint shop as a good undercoat could save problems down the track.
There is a product you can get that acts like a sealer and insulator but I can't think or find the name of it sorry, Uncle Al got up before me this morning. I'm sure someone here will come up with the name though. Try asking Mr Google as well.

The product Dougwe is thinking of could be "Vantec"
it is designed for application to RV's and has a sealing action as well as an insulating property.
google it for more info

I have just re-read your OP. Is it ONLY the roof you want to 're-surface'? If so, there are preparations that are specifically for roofs of vans etc.
If you are thinking of re-painting the whole van, then read below - if not, just ignore me
I haven't painted a caravan before ..... but, I have painted aluminium before.
I would suggest that surface preparation would be critical to the finish and longevity of the job.
I would rub back the existing surface as much as possible, back to just aluminium if necessary, and then use a good propriety etch and probably a good undercoat, unless the etch you choose does not require an undercoat over it.
I would choose a good automotive paint - not just some 'house paint' from Bunnings etc. Take the time to mask everything (or remove what can be easily removed) and then spray rather than brush.
Fair bit of work, but it should come up pretty good. Although rather you than me ... but I am basically too lazy these days

Thanks for the hints folks .... One thing I didn't mention is that I think the roof is not aluminum .... Appears to hand a "dimpled" surface for the want of a better description .... Am thinking it maybe a fibre glass type material???
The area is 99.9% flat ... Viz. the top only. It looks aged to me and am thinking a "coat of paint" could be a good?? Idea ...
Wasn't intending to go to Bunnings ..... was thinking more link an automotive paint or, if available, one that is "caravan specific" The link you have given, "Rocky" will be followed through .... Thanks for that.

Why not just leave it as it is. This costs nothing and involves no labour. Only passing pigeons and seagulls will notice the roof of your van is unpainted and probably not leave a deposit as they prefer new shiny surfaces to foul.

Once it's done it will probabky need to be refreshed from time to time. Personally I'd leave it alone. Out of sight out of mind. Ozjohn.
