Someone I know in WA had their blinkers fail recently while out driving and called the RAC.
The RAC couldn't fix the problem which need an auto sparky, but told them it was legal in WA to use hand signals.
I know from early days an extended arm was for turning right, and a crooked arm (hand pointing upwards vertically) was used for either a stop signal or for turning left.
This extract is from the SA Drivers Handbook;
"If a vehicle's direction indicators or brake lights are not in working order, or the vehicle is not fitted with indicators or brake lights, you must give a hand signal to turn right, stop or slow down suddenly (as illustrated). Bicycle riders are only required to give a hand signal when turning or diverging to the right, except when making a hook turn. - See more at: http://mylicence.sa.gov.au/road-rules/the-drivers-handbook/signals#sthash.3tBhPRwt.dpuf "
Bearing in mind many of us travel in all states from time to time, what is the situation in your state?

Well I was tempted to use 1 of em recently JC when a woman parked near a SCHOOL, to pick up kids obviously, 1/2 parked into a spot too small for the Cruiser and 1/2 into the road lane,,, FORCED me to stop and then cross double lines to get around her.
I stopped and gave her some "advice".

Gday...
Just checked the Victorian Road Rules. It is quite clear on how to signal for turns and stopping etc.
The regulations on turn/stop signals also includes "how to make a turn/stop signal by hand"
Guess it is legal in Victoria then.
Cheers - John

Thanks John, handy to know in case in ones travels your blinkers or stoplights pack up, at least you have a means of getting to auto electrical help other than being towed.

I know one hand signal and it only involves two fingers. I do have trouble doing it cos I do not have any fingers
see I am still on topic.

I think the raising of the index finger is probably known just about anywhere, where there are Idiots around.

Oh good, back on topic, anyway, in Oz we use two fingers, in the best British tradition to show we still have our digits to draw back on the yew bow, (the enemy used to cut off the bowmens two fingers when caught, and the two fingered wave was to tell 'em up you, I still have my fightin' fingers, or something like that.
We don't want to embrace too much of this one fingered Yankee culture do we? Heaven help us, they've already given us MacDonalds, how much more can we take??
Orright, hand signals, I would rather be booked for sticking my arm out the window than having a prang for want of, assuming these young whipper snappers out there even know what a hand signal means, but as said, cyclists have to use them and I think these days most states are uniform with the laws, barring a few special ones, like Melbourne city's hook turns,
