A response today from RMS NSW .. RE: Caravan Inspections

As a new owner of a NewAge Caravan, I sought clarity on inspections
.. and my new Caravan does require an annual inspection for registration renewal in NSW by a Heavy Vehicle Inspection Station !
My first renewal will be in December 2014 this year ..

Most light vehicles including cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles, panel vans, caravans, trailers and four wheel drives up to five years old are exempt from a safety inspection for registration renewal.
The following vehicles however require annual registration inspections:
Trailers (caravans) under 2 tonnes Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) fitted with breakaway brakes regardless of age
Trailers (caravans) over 2 tonnes but under 4.5 tonnes GVM with breakaway brakes regardless of age
Trailers (caravans) over 4.5 tonnes and under 9 tonnes GTM regardless of age.
The Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2007 requires that all trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) exceeding 2 tonnes be provided with a braking system which will operate automatically and promptly upon breakaway of the trailer from its towing vehicle, and that such application should be maintained for at least fifteen minutes.
Only Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Stations are equipped to test the electric braking systems. Light vehicle examiners in NSW are not currently accredited to inspect caravans fitted with electric or air type braking systems and to perform tests associated with the breakaway system.

The way it's worded, I'd say it it's current now .. if you find out it's not, then please post your findings ..
My Van was new last December and I need to to have it inspected this year for a renewal ..

Well don Jon, The pre -breakaway can be done through the normal inspection stations. I was not aware that break-away had to go to H/V inspection. Two mates have bushtrackers & take them to H/V inspections, gues its due to the break away system.

I have a New Age and registered it in QLD using a freinds address no inspections needed unless i sell it, which means I can still tow it in NSW without the inspection .The States are a joke when it comes to having uniform laws and the Federal Gov should bring the rules into line for all states

Are you all the same ones that want trucks to be subjected to more rigorous inspections so the highways are more safe for you to tow your maybe unroadworthy caravans along..
Whats good for the goose is good for the gander and maybe the RMS is doing us all a favour in wanting proper inspections done on caravans as well as trucks...
Maybe barrie is right and all states should adopt a standard scheme where ALL vehicles get a proper inspection every year..

Now just settle down there all you natives from north of the border, us Mexicans are just fine the way it is, with zero stamp duty on vans, rego about $48 a year, and no need for pesky inspections.
Us Mexicans are just fine with the states doing their own thing, and have no interest in a national standard, thank you very much.

my van is a 2010 model with breakaway brakes and other than the blue slip inspection for initial NSW rego all my renewals have been marked "inspection not required"
it would seem from the above that some in RMS have no idea what the rules are.

Aha! The magic words are "fitted with breakaway brakes". I had been wondering why we didn't have to have the caravan inspected last year, and if this was a new rule. No breakaway brakes, just electric braking system from the tug and a parking-brake.
When its 5 years old we'll just have to go through it I guess.
All a bit difficult if you are interstate at the time its due.

The main problem getting the car or van inspected when away from home is getting the paperwork forwarded to you when it arrives from RMS, there are inspection stations in every state, but no where near the number that there are in NSW.
You can get your rego and pink slip up to 3 months before they are due, so if you know that your rego will fall due in this 3 month period, you can get it renewed before you set off, but that 3 month period is set in stone it cannot be 3 months and a day, its so much easier if your van was registered in Victoria and saves a lot of money.
I really don't know why I didn't do it when I first bought the van, my savings would now have amounted to at least $4500.

This really is getting very confusing.
My 2350 GVM Coromal papers were marked "INSPECTION NOT REQUIRED" for last July (2013). So that means that the regs have been changed in the last 12 months.
I have no problems with 12 monthly inspections as our new van complies just as the Coromal did but as Gerty said what if the vehicle is interstate at the time?
After following the subject of the Battery Monitor on this and other Forums, the NSW RMS don't appear to have a clue from one inspection station to another as to whether they should be fitted or if they are to be tested/inspected. So how would interstate inspectors go?
I guess looking on the bright side, if the inspection raises an issue (s) that's covered by warranty, the Dealer will become your second best friend again. This could well be a fault you didn't know about if you don't crawl under your van or wouldn't know what you are looking at.

All well and good for caravans, however the costs are relatively small, when compared to the following.
Particularly when compared to changes proposed for costs of registering your Tug, you guessed it, in NSW,
Rego is set to priced on the "environmental friendliness" of your vehicle, "the tug".
Costs will include considerations such as; weight of vehicle; fuel efficiency; diesel or petrol; number of passengers; 2wd or 4wd; Age of vehicle; just to name a few.
My Tug is a 4.8 litre Petrol Nissan Patrol. OOOUUUUUCCCCCCHHHHHHHHH.

All a bit difficult if you are interstate at the time its due.
The main problem getting the car or van inspected when away from home is getting the paperwork forwarded to you when it arrives from RMS, there are inspection stations in every state, but no where near the number that there are in NSW.
