Snap you can do that and it should work if you aim it at the right satellite and the dish not bent. you need to make sure you have a 10700 LNB on the dish(the thing that is mounted on the end of the arm sticking out of the dish)

yes it is on a tripod it has a strong box STR 4654X I don't think I can use it with digital free to air tv that is why I think I have to get a vast box and a new LNB

How long have you had that unit?
have a look here and phone them before you buy anything, ask questions about your strong unit, they are great guys, I have done business with Philip in Vic, same company but nearer your home base.
There only 3 boxes approved for VAST reception and strong is not one of them.
Of the boxes currently approved the satking(aussie made) is proving to be popular
The Humax is a higher specification as it comes with a HDD and twin tuners but is more expensive.
I will second Wombats motion to have a look at Satplus, top people to deal with

Also if you are getting a new system try to get a dish on a tripod the iTech one is hard to find a signal with.

sorry mate but neither of those items will get you any free to air digital channels. BUT don't throw the box away you can still use it to search for channels on other satellites that can be received here in AUS. There is lots of entertainment out there if you want to go looking.
as wombat has said he uses a satlink finder. there are some good prices for the same meters here:sat-link.com.au/
you will definitely need a new LNB. one that is VAST certified and has an LO of 10700MHz.

I would like to know what the satfinder you have actually is. there are generally 2 types and analogue that has a needle to indicate sig strength or a digital like the SF3239 on Satplus site.
the dish if it is 65cm will be ok for the east coast but if you want signal all over aus you will need a 85cm which is easier to aim and suffers less rain fade
the cables and compass should be fine.
The ws 6933 you see on the satlink site is the new model. some retailers are still selling stock of the old model. it is still a reasonably good meter.

that dish will be fine but I would relegate that satfinder to "emergency spare" and get yourself a digital model that will only respond to the satellite you are looking for. Those old analogue units would indicate on any satellite so you would not know what you were aimed at.

some people say that a 65cm dish is NBG in WA, I have travelled all over Aus with 65cm dish and had no problems.

G'day Snap,
Plumb is not essential but if it is plumb it makes setting up and locating the signal a lot easier.
this is because your elevation and magnetic bearings will be accurate as will the skew on the LNB.
I have done it with the tripod at an angle but it was more difficult to get the signal just right.

Snap you will get (if you set it up proper) all the digital free to air channels you get at home.
you will see ads from alice springs, mt isa etc and some great video of some of our historic towns.
don't forget to register as a traveller and renew that rego every six months (or up to 4 weeks prior) at no cost
also be sure to have the system up and running before you register so the vast box will get it's authorisation via the satellite.

only if you have your dish set up and pointing at C1 then you can phone 1800 20 10 13 the vast connect people and they will do it there and then, then you will have a picture, oh once you phone them make sure you have your decoder set on ch 800, you will also need the reg number on the rear of the decoder card
