I am 'very new' to the whole motorhome way of life etc. To the point where we have just paid a deposit on a new motorhome & are unable to collect it until September. 'We' are graduating from a Navara ute and double swag, so we have absolutely no idea what we are in for!!
The 'advice' I am seeking relates to an offer from our dealer regarding a 'Vehicle Protection Package'. It involves paint protection, rust protection, cloth & vinyl protection, along with tinting of all windows not already tinted ie. veh windows, main window in van door (others already done!) Comes with 12 year warranty etc and lots of grand promises.
My question: Has anybody else had all these things done to their motorhome and is it a worthwhile venture? $2,800 we did not envisage having to spend on top of the purchase price of our motorhome. We do live on the South Coast of NSW and not far from the ocean, hence lots of salt spray etc....
If anyone can offer opinions, experience we would greatly appreciate the help,

No experience with MH ins only other "add on" insurance,,, my advice is read what is NOT covered. This is how sales staff make more $ at your expense and the devil is usually in the detail.
Maybe a good buy and may be not.
I would suspect, but not based on fact, that salt spray if you live and garage close to sea would not be covered, but once again you need to read the "package" and DON'T TAKE ANY SALESMAN'S WORD FOR WHAT'S IN OR OUT.

Thanks Baz421. The package is not so much an insurance issue, but series of 'treatments' to the vehicle to supposedly prolong its life & protect against elements/spills etc .....
Not something I have been offered when buying other vehicles in the past...
Do heed your advice re insurance though as that is something we will have to look closely at once we are closer to delivery....

Yeh Mike I drifted off subject didn't I.
I guess you have to judge the benefits and how to claim if something happens, but it still comes down to what you can claim IF ???????
Having said that we had our Landcruiser ute sprayed for rust inside doors and under body when new,,, so I think some things are worth it especially if you can see and quantify any problems.

Thanks gents for the advice. Definitely a lot of $$$$$'s and well worth delving into the 'fine print' much further. Having a sit down with salesman on Sat morning so will go armed with plenty of Q's before giving the go ahead. Rustproofing sound like a plus, not convinced re 'paint protection' just yet.

Congrats on your purchase. Regarding the protection package, I think it is similar to what you can get for a new car as optional extras. I would look carefully at rust and body protection things as i very much doubt these as environmental issues would be covered under insurance although if proven as caused by a defect it could be covered under the warranty ... Just my thoughts. We will be also be going down the Motorhome road later this year when our current trip comes to an end and imagine we may be offered the same package ... Check the insurance exclusions also.

One of the questions I would be asking is WHY it it needed IF the materials in the M/H are as good as they have been telling you, after all by the sounds of it you are buying a NEW unit..
I personally see it as just another way for the dealer/salesman to make an extra quid through kick backs.
IF this protection is needed then why wasn't it done during manufacture, are they telling you that the unit you are buying is below standard and needs this extra protection.???

Thanks one and all for your thoughts etc. Am seriously beginning to doubt the validity of the whole package business as we are buying a brand new unit. Suggestion re going it alone and chasing local suppliers is more than likely the way we will go if these things are really a necessity. The package is pushed as 'looking after your investment', but I thought that was what retired people do in their spare time - look after their own investment. Not so broken down yet that I could not spread some polish around when necessary.
As I said, thanks again for the input. It is very much appreciated to hear the advice of the experienced when I have absolutely none & I must admit being somewhat apprehensive about what we have done and where to from here.
Fingers crossed we run into lots of you on the road in the future for more advice and put some faces to the names on the forum.

If they are so keen to sell you a package of this M/H and they say it`s so good ,maybe express the fact that these items should have already been done and if not do them for free . Put the pressure on the salesperson if they want your business after all its a lot off money and you want it for a long time.

Just a little reply' we also bought a motor home brand new and payed the extra for protection of van although it wasn't quite as dear as your quote. Having a son inlaw who deals in all car/motor renos' swears by having paint protection on all vehicles, paint fades in the long term , in the 2yrs our van is as good as new always comes up good after a good wash, and looks as though we have given it a polish.
Well worth giving it some thought, motor homes are not that cheap, plus a small price to pay to keep it in good nick, Happy travels

Tomzys - Yes, biggest investment we have made since buying our own home. The 'quote' we had does seem to be over the top. Been back to agent & he quotes $900 just for paint protection now. As newcomers i think they 'see us coming' & an opportunity to make more $$$$. Seriously considering going it alone & chasing other suppliers for individual treatments if necessary & maybe still finish with the backside in my strides & $$$$ in my pockets, not the agents!! Back in his office in the morning so will see if we can't do some 'pushing' back in his direction......
use it 2 times a year and your van will looks good for year to come and you safe yourself at least $850

They come around fairly quick !! Keep in mind they have NOTHING to do with vehicle manufactures !

UPDATE: Went back to m/home supplier today armed with many questions etc thanks to everyone's advice etc on the forum.
Drove home this afternoon with NO Protection package in place & told them I would look into it in my own good time & no doubt much cheaper than they were offering. They took it in their stride & no more 'pushing' us to get it from them.
Did negotiate and am now having solar panels fitted to unit before delivery, after having read some heated exchanges on the forum re generators -v- solar....
Yet again, thanks one and all - we still have the $$$$'s in our pockets.....
September just can't come quick enough for us - finally got to have a test drive of the same unit we have ordered and The Good Sort enjoyed the experience of driving herself.

Could not agree more.
Most new vehicle sales will come with the same sales pitch. Generally used to start at around $2k, when refused come down to $1200 and when that is refused around $600 ~ $800. So as you can see it's a very big mark up. I knew a guy in the game who said he would be lucky to use more than $60 in materials and around an hour of his time. Shop around for your tint and get quality tint if that is what you want.

Thinking on your input, I may well have 2nd thoughts on the dealer fitting the solar panels & rear camera.
Have searched eBay & numerous websites to find much cheaper versions of both. The whole dealing with your dealer just gets worse the further you go. Glad i found this forum & people with experience.....
