Has anyone bought / used a 12 volt heater? Are they any good for a MH?

Judy, I bought a little ceramic 12v heater off fleabay and all I can say is USELESS. I have a small oil column heater if on 240v and a small gas heater that runs off one of those butane canisters when no 240v. I always make sure I have good ventilation and never sleep with the gas one on.

Head to the tropics Judy, far from cold here, although the local natives reckon it is now that it is 'Winter'. I told them to go down to Victoria and they will know winter then.

Aldi have the gas heaters from time to time - cost about $30-$40 and use the canisters. We bought one and it's real good and yes, we make sure we have ventilation.

Hi folks,
those nights bush camping can sure get cold.
I am an old gas man from another life and just wish to confirm the vital importance of adequate ventilation with gas appliances, and never leave the heater on (any heater) after you go to bed, sorry if I sound like your dear ole Nanny, but very important. LPG is safe, but does burn up the oxygen in the room.
I once had a stint in a decompression chamber, (RAAF) as the oxy was depleted we just got drowsy and were salvaged by the controllers before we carked it. The senses go awry before sleep sets in.
You might want to check the legality and compliance with Aussie standards of anything you buy, these days a lot of stuff slips in to the country under the radar. (like kids toys)
Sorry, not lecturing, hope to share info that I know of.

It is illegal to use any unflued gas heater in a caravan or motorhome.
It is not the depleted oxygen that will kill you, but the carbon monoxide. It is called "sleeping death" because you will just nod off quietly.
Cheers,
Peter

Our Avan has a 2 burner gas cooktop that puts out much more carbon monoxide etc than one of the canister gas heaters. There is no stovehood or ventilation device fitted by the factory. Question: why no warning on cooking with gas in a caravan?

OK, carbon monoxide is involved, but you know why fork lifts in confined ware houses run on LPG, it's because of reduced carbon monoxide emissions, both issues are valid, depleted oxy and carbon monoxide, so heed all these posts, and ensure good ventilation.
Personally I reckon you can't beat an electric blanket and a lovely cuddly missus! What say ladies?

Dennis, by law when a gas appliance is fitted to a van or H/M it is a requirement of the installer to attach a WARNING adjacent to the appliance and certify it to that effect..
If there is no warning notice there just PM me your address and I will post you one that you can put there..

Thanks Bob I'll take you up on your kind offer. I've attached a pic of the the unit and the "warning" sign - maybe it's a case of "She'll be right Bob!"
As I said in my PM to you I am not home at the moment but I think that is about the same stickers as I have and item 13 kinda covers having the vents clear when the appliance is in use.....
But I must admit it leaves a fair bit to be desired in it's clarity as far as ventilation goes..
Anyway I guess after all the lectures we get here on the GN forum we would be fairly stupid if we didn't assure ourselves that we had sufficient ventilation when using gas..
