I left Launceston on March 18 and travelled the Newell Hwy. To Mapleton, at the back of the Sunshine Coast, Qld. I am now on the return to Melbourne, with a stop at Finley NSW. During this trip I have stayed mostly at free camps and at some of these, many RVs were parked.
Apart from meeting a few GNs at Green Lake and a pre-arranged meeting with Pejay (Pete and June) at Bribie Island, I have seen no other GNs. That doesnt mean they were not there, but how do I recognise them
I saw hundreds of CMCA stickers on RVs, but not one GN sticker. I have 3 on my MH, one on the rear window, one on each side window. Even so, no one approached me and said Are you a GN ?
Now Im not looking for commission on the sale of GN stickers, but why dont members buy and display them. I noted one posting on this Forum that we now have 8000 members. If we all had at least one GN sticker, wouldnt it be easy to recognise each other ? Something to think about !!

Gday...
Dunno the answer to ya question BG. It has interested me often as well.
I have been travelling full-time for five years - covered more than 80,000km in QLD/NSW/VIC/SA/WA ..... in all that time I have never seen a GN sticker on a van/camper/motorhome/pushbike/scooter/roller skate or any other object. I have also not 'bumped' into a member of the forum at a camp/van park either. I have spoken to many fellow-campers but I have yet to meet one who has even heard of this forum. I do the 'gentle sell' and give the website but dunno if they ever joined or even looked at the forum.
The only GNs I have met have been through advice/information provided on this forum - get-togethers, "meet up" posts etc.
The problem is perhaps one of two things - a) not many buy/display a sticker; or b) there are not many GN forumites on the road in comparison to the hoards of other travellers (lost in the crowd ).
I am always looking for GN Forum stickers - ain't seen one yet (except at 'organised' meetings)
Cheers - John

BG, My observations are similar to yours and RockyL has nailed it I think.
consider this
Australia as at 2013 there are nearly 500,000 registered Rv's
At any given time there are approx. 150,000 on the road and travelling
GN forum has but 8000 members so I equate that to GN's being the proverbial needles in a very big haystack.
Even the biggest RV forum has around 20,000 members still a very small percentage.
I have stickers on my RV but have yet to see another
keep looking mate you will eventually see one. Let us know when you do.

I have often wondered that myself - Apart from one lovely lady that I met up with in northern NSW after learning we both faced the same health issue (g'day Beth), never saw one last year and when I spoke with other travellers at free camps/caravan parks etc., whilst most of them were full time retirees, the majority of them had no idea what I was talking about. Oh well ...... maybe one day!

We have an enlarged GN sticker on the back window of the motorhome - we have "bumped" into a couple of GN's, but meet mostly at pre arranged places - but then we have 8000 members - CMCA has about 70,000!!!! Volume!

Not long after joining the forum we got some stickers.
One on the back of the 'van, on the rear bumper area of the 4x4 & on the lower left front of the windscreen.
Also on the back of the 'van is a 30cm "Ulysses. Grow old disgracefully."
Because we have been Ulyssians for years & it is highly reflective for safety.
We met a GN solo traveller at a Maccas.
He spotted the sticker & sought us out.
Me with the grey beard made us easy to spot.

Why not just put a thread on here as to where you are & where you are going. see if anyone is in that area at the same time & organise it from there.
Very little hope of spotting a sticker while travelling & you could do a lot of looking while parked.
Be like local directories; let you fingers do the work.
This works for us & have now meet around 50 members.

Yep .. that is a good idea. This topic was raised a few years ago .. so I began putting my "itinerary" on Solos showing where I would be for the coming week or so.
This only works of course if there are others travelling at the same time to the same places. Unfortunately, I only met up with one forumite doing that over about three months. Gave up.

Great idea to post where you are going and where you will be stopping. We are leaving northern NSW tomorrow going west and then into QLD via either Bruxner or Gwydir. Still have to do some research on outback QLD roads today before deciding on route. Heading towards MT Isa and then either into NT or east ... To far ahead to decided on that part. Will post again tonight or tomorrow. We will free camp hopefully where toilets so we dont have to set up our tent and loo. Would welcome any meet ups along the way. Car and van are described in our signature ... Without the kayaks this trip.

.. I agree with you Jim .. and it also gives others the opportunity to speak with me in private if they didn't wish to put out info in the public arena for all to see.
Much easier to come to some arrangement when ones personal comfort zone is less challenged ..

150,000 RVers on the road at any one time . 8,000 members on this forum with probably 90% of them, casual visitors only.
Most people we have met in the last 2 years on the road don't belong to any forum. A lot of CMCA members but CMCA don't run their forum now.
While there are at least a dozen forums out there that I know of, most of them have small membership numbers .
And then , how many have stickers? Not very many at all I reckon.

What it boils down to is numbers..8000 is not a big number compared to half a million RVs registered in Australia.
However, we can still display a sticker, they cost only $2.00 and will help to identify ourselves on the road.
A special message to the Webmaster: I'll send my Bank account details for you to pay in my commission !!
I look at it this way, grey nomads are nice to meet whether they belong to this or any other forums. The only sticker I have come across, I spoke to the person who said they never post.

You really have to recognise if the caravaners next to you are over 60??, Chances are they are GN Although off season you can almost guarantee they are, High season they are just retirees taking a break from the winter month's, But I do agree, The amount of travellers I have seen on the road only about 1 in 30 would have heard of The grey nomads , and only about 2 in 50 are signed up, I have not met anyone that is here on this site and I have been traveling for 11 months solo, So any one in Darwin at the moment ???

We have a Nomads sticker on the back of our van and to date only met up with one other member as a result of the sticker. We will be on the road for about three months from a fortnights time heading to Darwin and surrounds and then on to the gulf and across to Cairns and then down the coast to home we will post our locations as we travel with the hope of meeting up wit other GN members.

No definite tracks yet for Qld, will post updates as we go.
A couple have given travel suggestions in this thread but they will need to be a new thread with correct heading so they can be found later, a post in the middle of a topic will never be found again.

We may possibly trip over each other Libby, as we'll be leaving Townsville in a week or so gradually making our way west to Isa, thence across NT into WA. You may also run into the convoy (Billiee, Jules, Marge, Steve, etc) who also are heading that way via Boulia, Isa but they will probably be ahead of us.
