Never thought I'd be saying this but it IS worth mentioning. We have always hurried through Wilcannia and barely looked sideways due to the reported problems in the town. Just recently we were told of the changes happening in the town ie all streets being alcohol free zones etc. a fellow traveler told us of the reasonably new CP, on the outskirts of the town, what an oasis. Green grass edging the lagoon, excellent amenities and very friendly staff. It is situated on the Darling River and offers some brilliant walks in the park. Bird lovers are well catered for as well. It was great to hear from a local of how a policeman came to town and decided to turn the town around, which he has. Townspeople are hoping that tourists will come back.

Gday...
Thanks Patricia. You made it so interesting I googled it .... certainly seems to live up to your description.
Thank you Patricia, that's great news. I always felt sorry for the Wilcannians.

Further to what I posted, we took a drive through the backstreets and were most impressed with the beautiful sandstone buildings, especially the Police Station and Courthouse. I have to add that I saw just one small section of graffiti. Told by a local that the young football team asked the locals to help them bring their footy fields to a better standard as they had neighbouring teams coming to compete. As we drove out today numerous young men were there mowing, weeding etc...... As I said " a good news story" let's hope it continues.

Stayed at Warrawong on the Darling last Monday. Wow was amazed at the park, was not expecting this oasis in the scrub. Best amenities we have come across this trip. Grass sites were fantastic after a few weeks of red dirt, gravel or concrete. Great walks along river and billabong with heaps of wild life. The young blokes looking after the place made sure we had plenty of wood for the large fire pit
Amazing! Breezed through here late last year and didn't stop. Will definitely have to earmark it for our next "Big Lap" passed. Thanks for the recommendation and great pics.

We were also told about this place and how great it was. The above photos show the amenities - each stall is like an ensuite. The owners turned Balranald CP around and then went out to Wilcannia to do the same. It will certainly make the trip west a little more 'do-able'.
PS This post should probably have been put in 'Caravan Parks' recommendations.
