On TV today, the manager of Cable Beach Caravan Park was saying that this year both the off season and on season numbers of people staying at their park and others in Broome were down.
A Caravan Industry spokesman said this was because more people were having cheap holidays overseas.

You forgot fuel costs also dING, long way to go with huge fuel bill to get there as well.....however I do believe everyone should do it at least once, fitted into trip around the block etc...

And that's what I have been told too....by good friends from here who have stayed the last 3 seasons there...didn't rebook for this year coz of the massive price hike there

Maybe once the mining boom is truly over, C/P at the top end will understand what is required to welcome tourists back. This may take a few years, in the meantime they can ponder about the way tourists have been treated in the past when the mining boom was at its peak.

I agree with vic41 you must see Broome at least. We fitted it in on a half lap. Not sorry it's nice and Cape Leveque is stunning we were jammed packed in the CP , amenities were not the best and prices sky high. We won't be back.

They give a price list for all Caravan Parks, It's no wonder people are not returning to Broome, here is a bit of a run down on the C.P. charges,
All are the cost for a Powered site for two people, per night...
1/ the Palm Grove C.P. from $32.00 - 42.50
2/ the Roebuck bay C.P. " $32.00 - 43.00
3/ the Broome Village C.P " $33.00 - 39.00
4/ the Broom C.P. " $34.00 - 39.00
5/ And finally the famous Cable Beach at a whopping $ 39.00 - 52.00

The lower prices (except for Cable Beach) aren't too bad in comparison with others around Oz on the coast, however the higher end (and I assume high season) prices are a bit rich.
I suppose next they will be like the others blaming free camps for the downturn. They just don't seem to get it...

Been there once, 3yrs ago. Found it to be over priced & over rated. One of those places on our trips that I have to say that I have been glad to have seen, but it did not live up to expectation. I am in no real hurry to go back I must say.

I think Broome is overpriced and overrated. Cable Beach is great for a swim though.

just to add costing me less to live in broome than it did in perth.
Site fee is $200 per week plus power,about $25 a week in the wet season.
Perth was $240 a week.
Woolworths and ||Coles same as city prices
Bunnings same as city prices
Mitre 10 and Iga a little dearer
Achol is dearer
Tourist attraction are siular to any where (over priced)
Services like mechanics, plumbers only a little dearer
Rents are very high but that dosnt affect grey nomads.
Wet season is by far the best time as there are no bloody toursist causing havock about town
Now don't get me wrong as when I leave I wont be back, its the end of the road, stay at better places and stayed at worse

This was a live interview with the manager of Cable Beach Caravan Park and also the Caravan Industry spokesman, so not sure why they would say that if it is the opposite. The manager appeared to be a bloke in his 60's or thereabouts.

PS: I have been to Broome several times in the past, but last time a couple of years ago coming from the east stayed at the Roebuck Plains Roadhouse outside of Broome overnight before heading south. I had no real desire to do otherwise, but still think it should be on peoples bucket list to visit at least once.
As Daryl Sommers said in the ad at one time, "if you never ever go, you'll never, never know" or words to that effect....

On an earlier post deisel was quoted at a $1.53.9.in WA . Here at mid north coast NSW it has been a $165; for a long time; haven't looked since the weekend started.

Hi Jim, at Grafton this morning deisel is $159.9 but one day last week one of the independents had it at $153.9...

I think the biggest problem with a lot of small businesses is that they are being run/managed by ex public servants or long term empolyees that got a golden handshake and think the best way to make more profit is to increase the price..where in real retail life the ONLY way to make more profit is to increase sales..
There is 2 ways to do this ...
1. Lower your price.. and attract more customers ..
2. Improve the services and product you offer ...and attract more customers..
Long term employees weather they be public or private are locked into the getting paid more for doing less syndrome.

A friend stays at his brothers property so when he gets any work done he uses that address and says he,s local finds he get 25/30% off ,so it,s not only the C/P ripping the tourist,s off .One croc attack on Cable beach and Broome will die .

no to the discounts for services. worked at 3 different mechanical centres, spare parts manager at one. An odd discount given for mates but more often an exchange of services. I f aboriginal corp is in the billing cycle the bill goes up more than for tourist. But to be totally honest I have found the same things where ever I hae lived, maybe different ethnic groups are targeted or maybe not exchange of services but cashies instead. Did the same with my business but tended to go a lot of jobs for people with some pressure like pensioner for cost of material only. Never made money like that but I sleep well.
Broome is no better or worse to live than any where else. If you come with with negative thoughts you will leave with those inhanced, if you come with an open mind you will leave inhanced. The best time of the year is the wet season, you see the real Broome.

Visited Broome last year, I'm sure it was a fascinating place to live and visit 40 years ago, now apart from the museum and Cable beach there's not much to see.
Yep its expensive and local business people seem to view visitors as little more than wallets on wheels.
We wont return.

We stayed at the Broome Village C/P in 2011, and they charged us $45 per night, for a horrible site of soft recently dug-up red dirt. Their current price as in KJ's post is reduced, but we would never go back there. We enjoyed Broome itself, will stop off for a brief visit on this trip.

November to april will give you the best of the wet. Humidity is up there and most spend all day in aircon. Wonderful photographic time with rich colours and wonderful thunder heads lashed with nearly daily doses of lightening. Throw in the odd cyclone heading down the coast
