I'm wondering ,why a column oil heater, when a small compact blow heater would do the job.
Another alternative would be a skirting board heater, available in 500 watts.
Cheers

I have an oil column heater I got from Big W, the best thing I ever bought. Runs on 240 only so just when in a powered situation or presumably generator.
It's small, not much bigger than a woman's handbag, 7 fin, black and cost around 20 something dollars.
On those cold nights the whole van keeps warm.
I also have a 12 volt fan heater I've never used as was told after I bought it would use a lot of battery. But kept it just in case.

I have a 5 fin oil heater and love it. Being safe you can leave it on all night and stay warm as toast. You need to ave 240v though.
I have a little gas heater that has a small gas canister and that is good too but you need to have good air circultation so you don't go to sleep on a permanent basis. I don't sleep with it on though, just to take chill out of air first thing in morning.

All the column oil heaters I have seen are about 1 metre by 30cm by 30cm to me this would take up a lot of room in a van, are there heaters available smaller than this, as they do seem to offer very safe heating method, but I couldn't afford the space to store the ones that I have seen.
Cheers

We bought our oil heater from Bunnings for about $39. It's brilliant but can only be used while in a CP as it's 240v. We have taken it everywhere and in Tassie it was most welcome. The heater goes on low around about 4pm and it warms the van so we can have our showers. When it's really cold it stays on low all night. It's a beautiful warmth. We find a blow heater too strong even on low and it makes the van stifling.
The oil heater is quite small and when we don't need it it goes into it's box in the back of the Prado. One of our better purchases.
When free camping we just add more clothes and our very warm doona to the bed. We have free camped at Harden in freezing weather and waking to ice everywhere, it's then we wish we could afford a diesel heater but we manage well

Problem with oil column heaters is that they are slow to heat up which means it's 30 minutes before you feel any real benefit. This also means that you must wait till they cool down so you can pack them away. They are also quite heavy and bulky, both which are major considerations in a camper. We use a cheap fan heater which gives instant heat, is light and small. For free camping we've just bought one of the gas heaters from Aldi that use the gas canister, and yes, we know they are not to be used in enclosed spaces. Good Luck.

The one I have hako, I can pick up with one finger, so small and light. Its sits in a space beside the toilet when not in use.
I only use it for the real cold when I've gone into a powered site, turn it on as soon as I get there and leave it on all night. Wake up to warmth.
Once dressed you can turn it off and it will cool down fairly quickly.

At a guess I'd say the column heater you have is a different and probably better design to what oil column heaters traditionally have been.

Hi Marg
Is there a brand name on that heater, I haven't been able to find a heater as small as yours in Big W, they are all about twice the size of yours
