Just recently someone known to me had an Ipad stolen, luckily they had a small engraving done on the item.
They duly reported item, serial number, description etc to the police and made a written report.
Later that day they were looking through a public sale site (GT) and saw a photo of the item listed there for sale with the engraving clearly visible.
I can't go into too much detail at present but suffice to say the police were informed and posing as buyers went to the advertisers address arrested the person selling it and the item has been retrieved. The case is ongoing.
Enough to say if you buy something online and pick it up in person, suggest ask for proof of ownership and get a receipt from the person concerned.

The owner was very relieved to get it back so quickly to say the least.
(once it had been identified and photographed etc, it was returned by the police to the owner a couple of days later).
