The joke is that interfering, censorious authoritarians like that always spelled even more trouble for other women. The matriarchy always ruled. They still do.
Second thoughts, maybe it isn't a joke after all. In modern Australia there seems to be an ever-growing horde of people male and female whose spare time is fully occupied with looking and interfering in others' back yards. It is considered 'progressive' to do so.
