I was advised by a friend who does a lot of 4WDriving that the Uniden is a very good brand. I have just purchased a Uniden 770NB and find it very compact and appears to work very well. I would suggest looking on EBay as there are a number of Uniden Dealers that offer the range of Uniden products. Mine cost me $177.00 landed with a 3 year warranty. Don't forget that you will need an aerial. Get one that is already tuned. I would not buy a unit from Officeworks as if anything goes wrong they have to send it to a Uniden Dealer. If you buy from a dealer you send it back to the dealer.

Gday...
I have one of these ... I have had it for about 18 months and it has been very good. I also have the 12V charger (as well as the standard 240v charger) and the adaptor for using an external antenna if I want/need to.
I would recommend, whether hand held or mounted in car, that 5W is the best - 1W and 2W have limited range - and very much dependent on 'line of sight'. I still have my 1W pair but rarely use them these days.
There are many available - other GNs will let you know which they use and their opinions. Ultimately, as always, the choice is yours.
Cheers - John

You can buy 5watt Hand Held UHF radios
But alas they cost more but/and you can also get
Mobile antennas for your vehicle that fit em so that they
Can serve a dual purpose at a cost of course
Uniden is a acceptable brand have one myself
Prob had 3 or 4 of them over the last 20 years or so

Portable with the small antenna does limit it's usefulness.
Fine for short range and bushwalking.
5 Watts is the best output.
We have an inbuilt UHF for road use.
A remote unit (the body is under the seat & all the controls, mike & speaker are in the hand set.).
Also have a 5W hand held for caravan maneuvering ( Good Lady can guide me with out the shouting).
Also good if one goes for a walk while the other stays in the tug.
So many to choose from. All the major brands are good.

We have a Uniden handheld with two options for power - 2watts and 5 watts. The 2 watts is to save on battery life. Also have an Icom 400Pro in the tug. GME is also a good brand and is Australian owned for those of us who feel patriotic.

My Son just bought me an early birthday present. A GME. Really great because the controls are on the steering wheel and it has a microphone set into the side pillar. I guess he thought it would be a good thing if I didn't have to take my hands off the steering wheel. LOL I am looking forward to using it when I finally get on the road.

Get onto ebay. Look for uniden and see what you think. I have had no issues with uniden. You can buy complete kids with cable, antenna etc. Good luck, safe travels.
Looking to buy a UHF radio, need help as never used one before.
This one any good ??

That puts out 5 watts 1/2 watt does
Not give you a lot of range and power
When traveling on the road
But depends what your needs are as
To what you buy I have a 5 watt UHF
Fitted in car and a 1/2 watt Hand held
For pottering around
