My thoughts on the subject are this....
If the Governments of our day had invested only 10% of the Tax's we payed in our working life, to cover the cost of Pensions, they wouldn't be in the Pickle they are heading for now.

The futures fund was aimed at maintaining pensions, amongst other things, that fund is now almost depleted so it's back to square one. That's the trouble with governments, they always break the previous ones promises and they are all pretty adept at doing it...spending other peoples money is a governments favourite hobby, wish that we coukd do it!

Retirees will one day be a valuable resource I hope.
We have a just down the road McDonalds where 2 or 3 55+ ladies work and I can tell you the service is stunning.
I have no idea why they put mumbling disinterested teenagers in customer facing positions in these places.
Perhaps when ageism can be dispensed with we will be able to do a few meaningful hours each day to supplement our pensions.
I don't mean exclusively in fast food outlets that was just an example. Clearly one shouldn't rely on a pension being sufficient moving forward.

I know on some tech issues I have spent well over 10 hours helping some good folk research/seek answers without being forced to shell out heaps of $.
There are many on here who also provide good advice from tech, to sewing, to cooking, to tips etc,,, so I thinks we are very useful now.
Just sharing our diverse opinions make us better people IMHO.

then talked her into opening a chain of Fish & chip shops across the Country,

Something has to be done. Old ideas are coming back to bite the pollies on the bum. For a long time the books looked good if someone was put on disability and taken off the dole. Unemployment figures looked so much better.
I can't understand how someone who has had Colitis, had the small intestine removed and will spend his life attached to a bag cannot get a disability pension yet a self inflicted alcoholic can be on a 100% disability. This is not a political statement the fight has been going on over two government terms. The same people run Centrelink

They are not imbeciles but are all tarred with the same brush, in my opinion. For me Ronald Reagan sums it up nicely "I have been told that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learnt that it bears a striking resemblance to the first". Can't get closer to the truth than that.

My suggestion is that not only aged pensioners have to wait till currently 65 may be 70 in future but also politicians should have to wait till the normal retirement age for their pension too.
We could save many millions possibly even Billions if we paid them a pro-rata pension based on their years of actual public service not based on one or two terms in Parliament, and if we were really serious it could be a performance based system based on the hours they work and the outcomes they achieve.
We could also cut back on the post employment perks they get and save a few more million.
My final point would save mega bucks if prior to governments calling for Royal Commissions it must be approved by the Supreme Court after they have justified the reasons and definitely not for political attacks on the other side, I think we have started something with the latest one that could do considerable damage to our Country

When I was visiting Canberra the subject of pollies' superannuation came up. I was astounded to learn that while politicians' superannuation is (rightly) indexed against average weekly earnings to give some protection against inflation, the superannuation payments of federal public servants are (wrongly) indexed against the (discounted) CPI. So retired public servants experience rapidly disappearing superannuation. Given that the greatest majority were low level workers anyhow, they are doing it hard.
Apparently over the years there were a number of parliamentary committee reports that identified the anomaly and unfairness, and recommended urgent action to rectify the problem, BUT neither side of politics did anything about it. Ex-military were in the same boat up until very recently when the indexation of their super was finally tied to indexation of the age pension.
Compare that with the urgency with which improvements in politicians' pay and entitlements are actioned.

Most of us have a roof over our heads and never go without a feed, we nearly always have some money in our pockets, we have a health system that is the envy of most other countries, a stable political system, there are good and bad pollies on both sides some have already been caught out and some are still to be caught.
A justice system that may not be perfect and never will be, but is way ahead of many others.
So look around you and count you blessings we are living in the greatest country in the world and many are willing to risk their lives to join us.
Here we are in the Lucky Country constantly bemoaning our fate, so go, get out there and enjoy.

I just think it is so sad that pensioners are now considered a drain on society, were they a drain when the government was quite happy to tax them on everything they earned as they (baby boomers and before) were the workers that helped to build this great country and the majority of them did not have the advantage of great super funds, a pension was something that was earned and now they call it welfare..................what an insult to people that have worked hard all their life. Just my thoughts on this sad situation, I am not of pension age but know a lot of people who are, including my Mum who is 82 and worked hard her entire life and now is considered nothing more then a drain on this country, whatever happened to looking after the older people who really have done their bit and just want to live out the rest of their life feeling they have contributed to the fullest.

Another thing that bugs me too Pauline, is how the Govt gets Chemists to try to palm off generic meds to pensioners, it makes them no cheaper to buy than the normal brands with the reduced price for pensioners (unless it is not on the govt's scheme list).
After paying taxes all our lives, why should we have to take generic?
I would think that those who are not on a pension would gain more from buying generic as they would be cheaper for them as they don't get any concessions for their meds.....just a thought!

I don't think the fund is depleted. Last time I read about it the fund was worth about 9 billion. It was set up to pay for unfunded public service pensions I believe.
