Well Jimbo,it's the way of the world, things change and we either keep on using the old operating system that we are used to or try and keep up.
My opinion for what it's worth is that Windows 8.1 is getting us used to App based programs that eventually will run our phones/Tablets/Computers. Even our TV's now 'Smart TV's. App based and you can run your computer using the TV. Looks good to me if I want to watch something off my computer or just have the larger screen view. Now there are other electronic systems that are App based. I saw an App based GPS for sale the other day so I honestly think it's the way it's going.
Yes 8.1 is different and takes getting used to. I am told there is a download called something like "Classic Shell" that you can personalise Windows 8.1 to work like the older operating systems.
I am sure there will be more replies but for me it's just a new operating system and I am now used to it.

I have heard there is supposed to be windows 9 being released next year..
if you still have windows windows 7 and no need to upgrade, unless getting a new pc/laptop
I'd leave it alone...

Not at all Jimbo, upgraded from XP to 8.1 a couple of months ago, all pretty straight forward.
A few minor niggles, however overall I'm getting on well with it, there are a couple of other threads on GN's that I have recently posted my thoughts about 8.1 so won't repeat it all again here.'

Download Advanced Uninstaller PRO (It's free)
then after it updates etc., you just uninstall all the rubbish programs you no longer want or need..
windows 8 is great, just get Classic Shell and its just like win 7 or on the startup page just press the windows key and the x key and select desktop

Windows 8 is OK when you get used to it and as wombat said, I used desktop until I felt more comfortable with it. Our sons just say, 'Keep trying Mum. You'll get used to it.' And I did.

I've got a laptop with vista on it, a desktop with XP on it, another desktop with Linux Mint on it, and I've had a Laptop with Win 8 on it for about 5 months and have only fired it up less than half a dozen times. Just can't feel enthused by it to tell the truth, and probably shouldn't have bought it.

Have you tried classic shell on your win 8 system?

yep I have Wombat. But now I've loaded Linux on my old shed computer, I'd rather play with that. The old laptop, which has a couple of problems, is still running anyway, so when I Have to go to windoze to do something I crank it up instead. And not a computer noob, have played with computers since about 1991. I guess I should load up the new antivirus (original 3 months free version of whatever it has installed ran out), then load my other progs and email etc and make a point of using it eh.

I have only recently put Linux on and old lappy and still not had time to have a real good look at it, will have to wait awhile longer as we are away doing house and farm sits.
