A couple of years ago I did the same from an internet provider "Clearly Contacts". All great BUT not recognised by HBA at that time. Check with your provider first.

Of course if you are like me with trifocals, coke bottle lenses if I don't get the right ones, it's not worth the experiment, although I would love to.

I don't get it, a product for 1/8th the price of local price gougers but refuse to use it because the "GUVMENT" may not help pay for it.
The 'gougers' probably get yours made there anyway for $50 then onsell to you for $600 but you are happy cos you get a $25 rebate!

I don't think it's because the "GUVMENT" might not pay for it, it's more probably that their health benefits fund which they privately pay for won't pay for it. We get $300 per year from our health benefits but they cannot pay for the overseas ones as they do not have the magic item number. If the overseas companies could supply the item number to claim for then they would pay.
By the way, I suspect that many local optical companies are actually getting the spectacles made overseas because when I question why it takes 2 weeks minimum for spectacles to be made, they say they are made up in Adelaide and it's postal time?
Strange - we change and buy Aussie canned fruit to save SPC which is foreign owned and now we're talking about buying specs overseas which will kill any local companies (if they exist)...methinks we are our own worst enemy

The local discount pharmacy used to have "prescription" specs on sale for around $10 per pair. These were off-the-shelf specs with identical lenses ground to a small range of standard dioptres. I always thought that I could "manufacture" my own glasses by taking two pairs of these specs (eg 1.5 dioptres and 2.0 dioptres) and removing the lens from one pair and fitting it into the other.

been using Zenni Optical for a few years now, great company and products.
how many of the so called optical shops in your local shopping centre ? usually about 2-3, how many of them ever go broke? answer none, because of their over priced products.
I had the same experience as iING, nose rubber replaced and glasses cleaned.
After 46 years here and still cosidered "a ten pound tourist" I still dont understand the aussie addiction of if its aussie it aint quite good enough. best is good old usa. I have just purchased my fourth pair of graded lenses from "Ausspecs" W.A. no problems whatsoever. 2 pairs for $126. 10 days delivery Matches all the yank and pommie efforts Whats the problem? Cant claim! ya gotta be joking

With my prescription its unlikely that I would end up with the right set up.
I go to Specsavers and the last 2 pairs of multifocals required 2 trips back to the store get the final alignment right.
If I was satisfied to just get standard index lenses, no antireflection coatings and plain not transition lenses the health fund would cover the entire cost of 2 pairs of glasses each year, but I prefer the extras and it is really only a small cost about every 2 years.
Plus by dealing with a local I have the guarantee that if I am not satisfied with the final result they will work with me till I am completely satisfied
Cheers

The last time I bought glasses from a retailer in oz, they wanted $1000, stuffed up the order twice, took 3 weeks until pickup. Zenni cost me $120 delivered, similar script in 8 days and perfect.

My wife and I take our prescription with us
When we go over seas we get great frames for around 25au dollars. Its not worth getting them here pay hundreds out of pocket even with health cover.
