Gday...
This is from the RACV site for their Total Care Package roadside assistance...
Trailer and caravan assistance
When a trailer or caravan is being towed by your vehicle breaks down, RACV will assist with repairs such as a wheel changing and the servicing of external lighting. Where we are unable to fix your trailer RACV will provide in Metropolitan Areas, the first 100km in any direction, from the point of breakdown is free of charge or in the country the first100km in any direction, from the point of breakdown is free of charge, or back to the attending Service Centre.
If you are under 100 km from home where Mechanical Breakdown occurs and your Vehicle, caravan or Trailer is Disabled and has been towed to claim a combination of benefits up to $250 (in total per incident) until the End of the Incident.
If you are more than 100 km from home and where Mechanical Breakdown occurs and your Vehicle, caravan or Trailer is Disabled and has been towed to a Place of Repair, you may claim a combination of the following benefits up to $2,400 (in total per incident). Where the Vehicle, caravan or Trailer is unable to be repaired within three business days at the Place of Repair to which it has been towed, RACV may attempt to find or offer an alternative Place of Repair. If repairs still cannot be effected within three business days you have the option of having your Vehicle transported to a destination of your choice within Australia. The benefits listed above will apply until the End of the Incident. Where the breakdown is solely limited to a caravan or Trailer; alternative transport and taxi benefits are not available. Accommodation benefits are only available if the caravan is being towed by an Eligible Vehicle.
Cheers - John

That is what I thought with RACV Total Care, but when I inquired, they have a size limit on the caravan of 6.7m total towed length (tow ball to rear bumper), according to my calculation that would be less than a 16ft van.
I have just reviewed the limits of NRMA and RACQ as well, and none of them cover towing a typical touring van (say 20ft). RACQ have a total length limit of 7m, NRMA have a total laden mass limit of 2 ton.
Interestingly, RACQ also specifically excludes 5th wheelers, and Motor Homes over 4 ton.

Gday...
There was "comment" from RACV recently (in last four weeks) that they were reviewing their caravan length for Total Care.
No indication of when the change (to longer van) will occur, or whether it will be extended to existing member policies or only for new policies.
Time will tell.
cheers - John

Dave, as you know RACQ transported both our van and cruiser down to Port Augusta. The van is 21ft plus drawbar, they loaded cruiser on truck and van on trailer.

I wondered about that Brandt, after reading there Ts&Cs they would have been well within their rights to have asked you to pay to move the van.
I wonder if common sense prevails, and teh Ts&Cs are just there as a safeguard in case they get into a situation where they regard a van as unsafe for any reason.
Why then did the lady on the phone today specifically ask me how long our van was, then make a point that they would not be able to tow it if the situation arose.
