Recently bought a 1996 Toyota Spacia wagon and when I turn the air con. on low, the motor does not like it, and when I turn the air con. on high, the van stops altogether. Starts again fortunately, after I wait a short while. My concern is does the electrical wiring need attention or is there some other reason that causes the trouble. Just love the techies' Corner, read it all the time and learned such a lot from it. Lets see what you guys come up with. Thanks June C.

Hi June.
Is there any noise made when this happens??
Sounds like the air conditioning compressor has got a seized bearing and the load created on the drive belt is stalling your engine.

Hi, no noise that I was aware of, van stopped on an overpass on the M1 so if there was a noise from the motor I might not have heard it. Do you suggest I take the van to my mechanic instead of an auto. electrician? Thanks so much for your reply June C.

If you bought this from a dealer very recently, then take it back to be fixed. If you bought it privately then you have a problem. It could be the idle air control valve or possible a dirty throttle plate, take it to an a/c auto electrician who should be able to find and fix it, if your vehicle is computer controlled, it could be in that section. if it's not the computer, IAC or dirty throttle plate, you may need a new compressor.

First suspect would be a siezed piston or rotor in the compressor. This often occurs due to lack of servicing of the air conditioning system.

You're right Graeme, will do what you suggest, that seems to be the logical answer. Let you know how it goes later thanks June C.
