I have read the forum posts on here that relate to VAST but I am still uncertain about all things satellite/vast.. I wonder if some more experienced fold can help?
I have a satellite dish I purchased at the SA Caravan show 2 years ago. I have used it while I was travelling through the Flinders ranges and other SA locations. I am preparing for a trip through Vic, NSW, Qld in July-August and want to make sure the system will still work for me.
I live in Mordialloc (Victoria) and have setup the disk in my back your and connected it all up using the Optus D3 satellite, I use a signal finder that has a built in screen for showing the stations it find before connection to the Receiver and TV.
The receiver I have is a Satlink DVBS2-800CA (http://www.satking.com.au/satellite-tv/vast-satellite-receiver/vast-satellite-receiver-dvbs2-800ca)
When I set about to tune the receiver it took considerable time to process and when it did finally conclude and the EPG was propogated I find I only have SBS and ABC. When I was using it in SA I also had 7, 9, and 10. These are no longer available. Is this normal now? Have these now been removed from the VAST collection?
Finally, what is the best option for using the satellite dish on the road? Can commercial free to air stations be viewed using the dish?
I am sure there will be other questions but this is a start..

G'day Mike
firstly the free to air digital stations are all broadcast from the Optus C1/D3 co -located satellites
your sat finder should be set to locate C1 with a download frequency of 12567MHz
you have the correct decoder for this system.
If your setup works where you are then it will be fine where you are planning to go. If you intend heading to far north QLD,NT,WA you may find that an85cm dish will make life much easier when it comes to locking on to a sat and also work better when it is raining(not happening enough I know)
try selecting the C1 sat and see how you go, also be sure you set the correct LNB skew angle as this is critical to maximum signal QUALITY.
I find that much easier than looking for D3.

G'day Mike
no problem
basically it goes something like this
as you move east to west the aiming point moves further east of north. The LNB skew also changes EG in Albany WA it is 4 degrees, in Sydney it is 38 degrees.
as you move from south to north the aiming point moves up so the dish is pointing higher in the sky
If you would like a chart that shows all these angles I can email it to you if you pm me your email addy.
hope that helps

Please remember that the elevation angles given in this table are all 3 deg HIGH so subtract 3 from the the angle you need for any town.

I contacted Satgear and was given the number for Wayne co owner. Before I could contact him, he had made the effort to call me.
Outcome is that Wayne will discuss my issues further next Friday. Talk about customer service. Top Shelf stuff from Satgear.
Will let you know the outcome after next week.

I have not seen anyone mention that you need to reregister every 6 months or you won't receive any commercial tv. If you have not re registered your account you need to goto mysattv and the the to renewal followed my your account info and your smart card number.
before doing that set up your system on the satellite receiving the programs you mentioned. After you receive a notification that your account has been updated you will need to wait for your decoder to be updated from the satellite. This may take a while especially if you have not used it for a while .
hope this helps in getting you back on sat tv. You have got it correctly for alinment so that should fix the issue for you.
regards
Brian

Hi Brian. My registration is still active. Needs to be renewed in April 2014. It has been a while since I used it though so that could be why it is taking so long to authorise all the stations.
I will be doing more testing over the weekend so I will leave it connected for a few hours to make sure it authorises ok.

I am now in Mansfield staying in a private property .. Wonderful....
I have set up the dish...have a perfect signal on C1 and have tuned the receiver. When I tune the receiver I see all the free to air stations listed in the found channels but when I view the final EPG all is see listed is SBS and ABC stations.
Should I contact the VAST ???

mike I would reboot the box and wait while it downloads the data
if you can view the commercial channels you should also be able to see the program info
if you tune to a channel say 7 and press the info button do you see info on that program?

No joy... I rebooted... Re-tuned... Re-scanned stations... As I did this I saw a list of all found stations... Total of 110 stations found and these included all the usual free to air stations. However, when I view the EPG I still only see ABC and SBS..
I will leave it connects foe a few hours and see if they are authorised and displayed...
Keep tuned for the next instalment in the saga of mike tuning satellite.

revemike said

No. Only SBS and ABC channels... No other are listed in the EPG or available using channel selector.
I write the renewal date on a bit of duct tape and stick it to the box so I wont forget
you could go hi tech and put a reminder in your phone for a couple weeks ahead

I am having a strange problem with my Satking STB.
I was using a SK-500 Satellite finder, but couldn't get a quality signal. Bought a SAK-3200.
My SK-3200 finder is showing 82% Strength and 78% quality, however the STB just keeps scanning with no result.
I recently changed my LNB to a new Satking but was having the same problem before that.
I've tried everything I can think of. Checked all the parameters. 3 different cables, all show 13.4V. Signal finding a number of times, turn the STB off and on. Factory reset. Tried a rehit, but this won't work without the box getting a signal.
At this point I'm thinking something internal.
Anyone had a similar problem?

It's got me beat why you bother with the Vast stuff - especially when
ABC and SBS is all you get at times.
Most people have a FOX decoder - why don't you take that instead and
just use your terrestrial antenna for the local stuff.
Lots easier and you aren't stuck with the business of registration and
so-on.
The Vast stuff is a cumbersome dying system soon to be discontinued in
many districts.

a follow up question... while testing at home and carrying out the tuning do I choose the State I will be going to or the State I am currently in ?
Mike that depends on whether you still want to watch the programming you see at home.
if you change states you will get different programming
have a look here for more info sattvguide.com.au/
