We live in NSW & are picking up our new Supreme caravan from Victoria. Is there any benefit in registering the van in Victoria or should we just get a permit to travel and register in NSW? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Much cheaper to rego the van in Victoria if you can come up with a Victorian address and no pink slip in the future.

Agree with David. If you can use a Vic address will be much cheaper.

Might be cheaper, but I am happy to have an annual safety check (after the 1st 5 years).

Van rego in Vic - $47.60 per year, goes up twice year but minimally. No need to take it over the pits as it has no motor. Will never need to go over the pits even when it gets old(er).
Best of luck with the After Sales Service. You might (said 'might') need it.

There are a few advantages with Victorian registration in preference to NSW.
1. Registration cost is less than 10% if in Vic. Example, my van to register in NSW is over $600 per year plus the inspection of around$60 in Vic it is less than $50 with no inspection fee.
2. No ridiculous breakaway monitor required, which now necessitates the more expensive heavy vehicle inspection every year in NSW.
3. No yearly inspection costs, this does not mean that you should not keep a careful eye on safety features etc. which can be carried out by any reliable mechanic at a fraction of the inspection fee. My experience with testing stations is that they carry out a very cursory and mediocre job which leaves a lot of points such as shackles etc unexamined.

Ours cost $275 to register the van in NSW, plus $28 for the inspection. With break away brakes the fee is $38.30.

Be sure to weigh it before you load it and compare the weighbridge figures with the plate on the van.
easier to make adjustments before first registration.
I learned this the hard way.

Yes, we made that mistake too. the compliance plate turned out to be correct, but it was registered (by the dealer) as weighing 300kg's less!
Victorian rego is cheaper but you have to have an address at which you can claim to "garage" it, and get mail.
Wouldn't it be great to have standardised rego's Australia-wide!!!!

Be careful what you wish for, if they did ever standardise, the price would be set at what we pay in the most expensive state and I think that is NSW.
