Hello all - what is your thought on the brumby cull in Mt. Kosciusko National Park? Personally I think the brumbies in the Snowies are a part of our history and if the cull goes anything like the one in the Guy Fawkes Nationals Park, someone should be answerable - it was an absolute disgrace.

Problem is, brumbies are part of European history, just a little over 200 years. They do a lot of damage and while eradication may never happen, culling to an acceptable level is needed.
The Bracks Labor Government in Victoria took cattle out of the high country which kept a lot of the inland valleys clear of long grass. Now they are gone, the grass is that high you could lose yourself walking through it.
The other problem is the grass acts like a wick for bush fires. The biggest problem is it is bloody hard to set up when camping. I used to take a whipper snipper when we went into the High Country. Places like Woonangatta valley, Top Crossing behind Mansfield. Get strange looks when they first see it and you then get asked if they could borrow it when we got to set up.
Cull the bloody things, there are 10's of thousands. Far to large a population to be sustainable. While they are there, cull the deer and the dogs at the same time.

Of course we could leave them alone then watch them interbreed, get worm infested and overgraze so they starve......mmmm - not very 'green' am I!!!!! Same problem in NZ with the Kaimanawa horses but at least there they cull by rounding some of them up and sell off as many as they can - the rest go to pet food.

Yes, I agree that they should be culled to a certain point but on the TV the other night they were talking about aerial culling from a helicopter which was tried in the Guy Fawkes National Park some years ago and it was disgraceful. The poor horses were shot - not outright - and they were left to die a slow death. If it has to be done it should be done properly.

Actually went on a horse trek through some of it - just another beautiful part of Australia. Going on the other aerial shoot it wasn't successful though.

Apparently once again, The Kiwi's show they can do things , Better, and more Humanely than Aussies, NO ANIMAL should have to die a slow, painful, Lingering, Death, I agree that in some cases, Culling IS required, However Aerial Shooting is ''Gung Ho ?? and proven to be Cruel and not effective,

That was also mentioned on the TV dazren - rounding them up and selling what they could and the rest go to pet food but they don't think it is culling enough of them.

Bah, allow free camping for those hungry GNs and problem part-solved at least. It takes a number of solutions. At the very least they ought allow recreational hunting. I can see it now: GN washing lines with wholesome neddy biltong protein displacing the undies.
As for commercial use of the meat, you can confidently expect substitution in pies and the like. Problem is though, that the meat processors who substitute meat (and they are not always the smaller outfits!), prefer the boxes of dirt-cheap, highly suspect, non-hygienically slaughtered meat. True from the previous Royal Commission into meat substitution, unfortunately.
I don't know why some people are squeamish about allowing hunters to take game meat for the table. It is our inheritance and that of many migrants too.

It wasn't a shot at you. In fact none was even attempted. A simple observation was made.
There is no difference to argue. You may find from my previous posts on the subject of culls that while I prefer clean shots and use of carcasses where possible, it is undeniable that some territory cannot be attempted on foot. I can never see the argument for disallowing ordinary law-abiding citizens from taking game where available though. That is cheap and will always maintain some pressure on 'pest' animals.
Back to my default lighthearted mode. You too I hope.

I don't know what happened in the Guy Fawks NP. but I have shot pigs from helicopters around 30 - 40 times.
There is no need to leave any wounded animals. You are only a few meters above them . Very easy to finish them off.
I'm sure any professional shooter would do that.

The brumbies were being culled in the Guy Fawkes NP from a helicopter - they were shot at and the majority were only wounded and left to die a long and slow death or even just maimed. I know culling has to happen but it should be done properly. I don't know whether professional shooters were used or not but I can see your point sandsmere.

I did hear someone assuring us on the radio that there was a second Helicopter with another shooter making sure that the wounded ones were disposed of............

I never heard that Spida - there were quite a few photos floating around - I know they can be ''touched up'' but I am thinking that a few locals that knew the area saw some of the aftermath.

I'd start with the Pollies that took firearms away from recreational shooters that kept the feral animals in check, such as wild pigs that have over-populated to an extent that we have to employ shooters to cull them so they don't eat turtle eggs. Used to go out of a weekend and shoot a few in old days. Had friends that planned holidays around shooting trips to cull wild goats, roo's, dingo's and rabbits. Didn't cost tax payers anything. Now we wait until things get so bad that it takes an airborne assault to keep numbers under control. They'd be followed closely by Greenies who haven't a clue what happens in the bush.

The taking of animals is highly regulated and closely monitored. In particular, private hunters including farmers are very highly regulated and monitored, as is what must done to conserve the environment and protect livestock.
Are activists always the most credible sources? Activists are very often operating illegally. There have been highly suspect wild ducks that activists have claimed to have gathered during open days: odd species, wrong type of shot and birds apparently deep frozen in advance. Where and how do they get them? Not referring to anyone posting here, but there is a particular personality that is attracted to serial protests, to activism, who gets his/her buzz from wielding power over others and forcing 'authority' bend over.
It is obviously unfair and wrong to suggest that those involved in approving and conducting culling and farmers themselves have no respect or care for the animals involved.
It is interesting that activists concentrate on animals that are shot, but never mention and therefore must be taken as supporting the option of 1080 drops instead.
I'd like to hear from some real farmers too instead of the rather odd sort of serial activist, vegan fringe-dweller that a certain publicly-funded national broadcaster seems to prefer.
As I am led to believe, the RSPCA supports aerial culling.
