Hi all, this is my first post. Nice to be here. Wondering if anyone knows about the 'extra' work required by NSW to register a fifth wheeler/tow vehicle. I am told it is much cheaper to register in QLD but I can't help but wonder why NSW has such strict requirements (and annual inspections in NSW) and other states do not. Does this mean the NSW rego requirements make the rig safer??? Can anyone enlighten me?

I don't think that annual inspections in NSW make your rig any safer if you value your own safety as you will ensure that rig is serviced regularly and if something needs replacing it will happen, but there are others on the road that don't care about themselves or others safety and will only get repairs done or tyres replaced when forced to do by the annual inspection.

As our 5-er was built in Brisbane (Southern Cross) it was also registered there. As you're probably aware, Qld only requires annual inspections if the van is over 3.5 tonnes (gross trailer mass), so SC registered it as 3.49 tonnes GTM. So far we've not found any reason to change it, although we'd certainly look at Victoria if we had an address there!

No safer just a state revenue trap. Like vans they class them as a motor vehicle while others class them as a trailer The inspection only ever consists lights and brakes and so long as they work they pass it Bit hit and miss if you boil it down
