My husband and I are looking at selling our home and travelling round Australia - we would be living in a caravan and working as we go. We would love to hear the fors and againsts from others that have done this.
Is it necessary to have a shower/toilet in the van or are the free camping spots equipped?

We are doing the work and travel thing...loving it so far but getting offered too much work!! And it seems too good an opportunity to turn it down! This nursing contract finishes beginning of May...THEN we will explore some more! As to the shower and toilet thing...would you want to live in a house and go to work daily without a shower and toilet? I sure as hell wouldn't! There is no way I would consider travelling and working without a shower and toilet on board!! This is my HOME!! :)

Get a toilet and shower if you want to free camp. We aren't going free-camping initially, but we still have a portable thunderbox, and a solar shower, just in case.

nothing feels better in the afternoon after an hot day to have a shower
ours is only a small popup tent beside the caravan that also house the toilet when not showering
we don't have a big caravan but Happy as Larry with it

hi kerry .we are on the road full time ,definetly a shwr and loo mate .some of the camp sites are basic and in the colder mths it nice to lather up and do it all in your own van the site where we are has great ammen block but they are not all like this one regards work , we have had the same eperience as others , sometimes too much , last job i had they wanted me to stay full time but we needed to move on and actually get back to the mainland ,we did 11mths 3weeks and 3 days in tassie , i think it too depends too on trades or skills we have a lot of doomsday taswegians sai you,ll never get work here , we ha 4 jobs in tassie , good luck and enjoy your plans and travelling

Hi.
Congratulations for great decision. This is great way to travel and support while traveling if you aren't on some sort of pension for the support. Many young people do this all over the country. But do not count for showers on many free camp facilities. Often there are toilets, but showers are provided only rarely. It ia a very good idea to have your own porta-potti or some other toilet facility onboard as many free camp sites don't have even a toilet. There are great gas water heaters to fit your own shower on your rig, too. Cheaper solution is a solar shower water bag. Just hang it on the tree bough and have a shower after heating it in the sun over the day time.

we are not on the road all the time but I would say a shower toilet is a must have, in regards to work, you may find work that has camping onsite as an option, usually with shower/toilet facilities, keep your eyes open for jobs like that as it will help if not paying sites fees, farm stays are another option, have a look here http://thegreynomads.com.au/ scroll down to the classified section, read carefully as some are out of date.

Yep, I agree - in our opinion, toilet and shower are a must; we originally tried it without, but quickly found that we needed to change to another caravan that had an ensuite. We're working too; I do some online work which is ideal, also do nursing which is plentiful, Tony picks up bits and pieces of work here and there; there's often work in rural areas near mines because a lot of the locals have 'gone to the mines' leaving lesser-paid town work available. A trade background is good, cos tradespeople are in short supply in the rural areas. There's lots of websites with work for nomads, including ofcourse the harvest trail. Enjoy :)

we have been working our way around ever so slowly, 12 months in Albany, 12 months in Perth, and into our second year in Broome. Just a side note, the wet seasons are the best. We have both had no problems getting work of choice in the places we have been. The speed we move at is slow but rewarding. Yes to the ensuite
