Telstra spokesperson Scott Whiffin said that the ruling by the Supreme Court was a win for consumers.
Optus has been caught out misleading Australians by implying their geographic network coverage is similar to Telstras, Mr Whiffin said.
Were upfront about the extent of our network coverage because we know its an important consideration for anyone choosing a mobile plan.
Curiously Optus has since removed information about its geographic coverage from its consumer web pages. Geographic coverage matters to Australians after all we dont spend our lives at home. Its time for Optus to be upfront about the geographic coverage it offers.
So there you go .. Telco's telling porkies! What next?

Since 85% of Australias population lives within 50km of the coast it effectively means that, apart from populated areas inland, if you can't smell the salt air your phone is just an expensive ornament.

Mousey, where were you driving. Eastern States, Hume, Pacific and Newell coverage is good until you go down into a valley then they all cut out. I think the Yanks and Kiwis may have it right calling them Cell Phones. We use the word "Mobile" and expect to be able to drive, walk and talk. Doesn't happen.
When you head west towards Northern SA, Eastern WA, South WA except the habited areas, coverage is poor to nil on both telcos. Telstra, unfortunately, do give better coverage.

I have Both,covered,one phone with Amaysim/Optus,
and the other with Aldi/Telstra,
the Amaysim/Optus no longer works well at home, due to low Signal
the Aldi/Telstra full strength
call rates are the same on each, cheap enough to
cover most areas.
suits me.

We have always had both i.e. Pre-Paid Telstra and Dodo (Optus Towers). Back in Cairns for 4 years (2007-2011) camped at Fishery Falls Van Park (40kms Sth) Telstra just about useless DODO worked great then spent 15 months in Tassie 2011-2013 with a house sit near "Hobart Airport", Acton Park again Telstra useless DODO worked great. I sent a Complaint email to Telstra they reimbursed me another $150 and even after 6 months usage could only use $70 of that as the signal quality was RUBBISH, while DODO was bombing on at any time of the day/night.
Telstras' reply was that in the next 12 months they were supposedly improving signal in the State. My initial email response was that before all the NEW Internet capable phones were introduced they should have upgraded the Networks to cope beforehand, instead of the Public Users losing out with bad signal quality and therefore not being able to use what they had paid for in plans in the allotted time.
So as previously stated still use both even though the Telstra Prepaid has increased in Cost from $150 to $180 for 12GB and Dodo is still $150 for 15GB.
Cheers Kev.

I emphathise with you in your Telstra network problems.
It is an unfortunate fact that 'coverage/reception' is a quite complex technical issue.
I assume that early in the bit you checked that your handset was suitable for the available transmitted frequencies in the areas that you were located.
It seems that we won't be seeing anymore of those adds by Optus suggesting that there was only <1% difference in coverage.
A Supreme Court ruling has just found Optus was misleading us ..
