I usually have a "Morecomb" Field Guide to Australian birds in the glove-box of the car, and am disgusted with myself for leaving it behind this time.
Having seen a new bird, I tried googling for a site which has pictures of birds organised similarly to a field guide... no luck so far, getting frustrated!.
Does anybody know of such a web-site please? If all else fails I will just have to get another book!

There is a free (Limited) version of the Morecomb Identification book free on smart phones iTunes or Android devices. It comes as Australian Lite. There is also an App called Museum Victoria's Field guide also free from the App stores. That is mainly Victorian Flora and Fauna but it does have a bird section.
PS there is another one on iTunes which is called Aust. Bird Guide published by Galexy which has 754 bird descriptions. I can only find this one on iTunes not the Android sites.

birdsinbackyards.net is a handy site for identifying birds. If you can't identify the bird from the site just post a photo and someone will know what it is.

Not free Gerty but we use Michael Marcombe's eGuide to Australian Birds. It is very comprehensive, even has bird calls.
Also Pizzey and Knight Birds of Australia is now out on a digital version. Both can be found in the App Store.
if you purchase I tunes cards when they are 20 - 30% off you can then save on the purchases.
have you identified the bird yet Gerty?
Cheers

I think I know what it is, Glenda, after much work of my old grey cells. Its been sitting in a tree about the caravan for 2 days, leaves in the evening, returns @ breakfast time. Is there such a thing as a "Night Heron? It has a creamy white belly, v short tail, chestnut brown wings, black head with a long white feather on the back.
Thanks for the advice, but Apps aren't much good when you just have an old-fashioned laptop and mobile phone... We might be able to buy the Morecomb eguide in a file-type our lap-top works with, would be nice to hear the bird-calls!

Does sound like a Night Heron in breeding plumage Gerty. Well done.
Used to like bird watching, now I just fall asleep.

Hi all. When we were setting up the M/h for travelling the few books we kept were" The Birds of Australia" by Ken Simpson and Nicholas Day and field guides on both mammals and reptiles. As we travel through unfamiliar territory all of these books get a fair bit of use. Nothing worse than seeing something new and not having any idea what it is. Cheers.

I have the Morcombe lite for my android tablet but baulk at paying $28 something for the full version so I have Australian Birds as well which seems quite useful. I am wavering about getting the full version of Morcombe as it really is a good guide

You may be able to download the Vic museum app from the following website http://www.museumvictoria.com.au/apps/fieldguide
The Morecomb one from iTunes or Appstore or http://www.mydigitalearth.com:
Also on the Google Play website.
Hope this helps
