Is there any plans of having a "view new posts" button on the forum home page so that you can go straight to new posts since your last visit. All the other forums I use have this option. Also is there any plans for Tapatalk?
thanks Kevin

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The Caravanner's Forum uses phpbb3 (different software) There are some options with this to make it user friendly. Others probably explain better than I.

You scroll down to the bottom of the page and change the setting to last modified first. That way new posts will appear first.

You can use the RSS feed to get lastest posts in your browser, do not need to be logged in.

Hi Pam,
That only changes the order that new info appear within a post. What I meant is that you can select via "view new post" in forum home page only those posts that have are new or have been added to.

Kevin
It also changes the order that new THREADS appear in each board.
Open a board, General, Techies, I Digress etc and any thread with a new unread (by you) post will appear in Bold letters with the latest thread at the top.
Like you I could not get a answer on this question - just all the answers you got
Aussie motorhomes forum and MySwag plus other forums have the features you are asking about.
Very convenient and easy to use quickly

But when you can have new posts appear at the top of each forum and in bold, what is the difference. You can easily recognize new posts on here. Why have another function to search for them?
laurieoz said

Because if posts are in the order of the latest post, you have to scroll down and try and find the last post that you read.
With other forums the first new post since you have read last time comes up straight away and you read from there.
Try it - it works great!

There are 19 different forums on the home page. If all have new/updated posts in all you would have to go into each one individually to read, as opposed to one "view new post" button which would bring them all up, usually in date/time order. The other good feature is that you can tell how active a forum is as you are told how many new/updated posts there are since your last visit.

YES - you are correct rmb3218
I like reading this forum but:
It is very tedious trying to find what you have read and not read (even though the threads are bold when there are new posts etc etc)
I hope they can add the feature like on the other forums as you suggest

Perhaps if you are so 'time poor' then perhaps reading about caravanning may not be for you. Just saying.
Perhaps people here like this forum because it is different to others.
Normally it is a happy place without too much complaining.

View New posts is a great facility but may not be an option on the program used for this forum. Our webmaster is always very obliging to any ideas to improve the usability of the forum when the option is available.

I am happy you also think it is a good facility.
If it was possible to incorporate this into the forum I am sure many would see the benifits
If it is not possible - not problems - hard to do if the option not available - If it was possible I am sure it would have been done before now
Maybe the webmaster can tell us if it is possible

I suggested a way of doing this to the forum owner months ago and the conversation dried up. I assumed it was too difficult.
I thought I must have been the only person frustrated by it.
All that is needed is a button or link somewhere that takes you to http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/pages/recent/
In the meantime, if you save that link as a bookmark or favorite, or even a desktop shortcut it will give you what you want.
Cheers,
Neil

Hi Neil
Thank you, but this does not take you the last post you read for each topic - it tells you what topic has new posts, and you have to go through all the posts of the topic to find what you have and not read - unless I misunderstood

Yes I agree, a read new posts button would make it much easier. Especially when you read a number of different forums. But it is what it is I guess.

Apologies Laurie, I misread your needs. This link just gives you all recent posts in time order regardless of the category. I sure find it much easier because I can scan down the list for topics of interest without having to go into each category.
cheers,
Neil

Being time poor has nothing to do with the situation, RMB3218 has a good point, being able to click one button on the home page to view all new posts since your last visit is a real time saver.
Shouting (because it is different) is unhelpful and rude, Kevin as a new comer asked a valid and reasonable question about adding a useful and time saving feature, a feature I have often wondered about.
Instead of telling a newcomer to simply conform, a few words of welcome would have been nice, forums are pretty much like life, you get back what you put in.

For your info Santa, what (how) I said "because it is different" is deemed in forum speak as emphasizing the words, much like underlining or using italics. No way was it meant to be rude, if I had wished to shout then I would use capitals.
I was actually responding to Laurieoz who has been a member since November so I guess I thought the "few words of welcome" would be a bit late now similar to Kevin, member since September, old hands now.
I think it has been pointed out enough times now that the machine that drives this forum is different to others and is difficult if not impossible to do what is requested so, good idea or not, there is no point harping about it.

Not wanting to harp on about it, but I haven't read a topic about the button before, and certainly the OP hasn't either. And the read new posts button would hardly detract from the character of the forum as far as I can see. So I don't think any of the people who like the forum "because it is different" would take umberage to such a handy facility.

Instead of everyone getting their knickers in a knot, perhaps those who would like to see such a function could pm Cindy and make their suggestions (with full explanation), that is the best way to get things changed IMHO.
Cindy does not always have time to read every thread, and a pm is the best way of bringing suggestions to her attention for consideration.

The biggest problem with this forum's software is its dysfunctional search facility. Open source phpBB3 software is far superior in that regard and in every other aspect that comes to mind. The RSS feeds facility is also very poor. The feed list contains only the last 10 posts, and the content of each feed contains only the first line, not the entire post. "View New Posts" is a feature that is sorely needed. Better still, instead of patching this crap software, I would prefer that it be dumped and replaced with phpBB3. After all, it's free.
