Had to get my laptop out to check on this as couldn't get into it on the slow phone.
Thought it might have been Mad Mick at Greens. Thank goodness it wasn't and was not at Greens at all.

This is why it is so important to bush camp with other people, being alone is dangerous and there are
a number of horror stories just like this one in Shepparton.

Gday...
Caution and care is always wise. However, I would suggest far more people are threatened in this way in their homes, on the city streets.
It is 'society' that is the danger - and often camping away from 'society' is far safer.
Again - exercise caution, care and common sense ... just as you do at home.

"Bush camp" no, they were camping in Shepparton, not a smart move.

... I have been camping for the past 50-odd years ... usually alone. It is my preferred camping style.
I still camp alone predominantly - sometimes in my little tent but usually in my big aluminium tent - and [I hope that Mr Murphy ain't reading this forum] I have never encountered any serious problem that made me feel threatened ... cautious, wary perhaps ... but never threatened.
Choose where you camp, use common sense, and enjoy what this country has to offer.
Cheers - John

Totally disagree, like Rockylizard we prefer to camp alone, have done for the past 30 years, never a problem.

The news report said "Camping ground near Shepparton"... does anybody know where exactly?

Looks like its right on the edge of the Shep town area.
I'm sorry for them, they must have had a terrible fright, but camping in a town isn't something we'd do, unless in a caravan park.
But we've often camped on our own, in the tent or caravan, in places far from towns and only if it "felt" right.

It's fruit picking season and the town camps are full of backpackers & itinerant workers who on the whole are well behaved and here to earn money.
Unfortunately we also get the odd undesirable type who causes trouble .
Fortunately the local Police do a good job.
This incident is rare but gets a lot of media attention which gives the area a bad name
Cheers,
John
