I have acidentaly downloaded a virus which has taken over my search engines, mostly in chrome, and seems impossible to get rid of. Any sugestions? Thanks, Bill.

Bill Try downloading Hitman Pro - free trial version - I had a problem with slow service and several on line sessions with level 2 expert said no virus must be your problem etc etc,,,, and he was running Hitman Pro by remote,,, he then found the virus that others programs missed.
So maybe try this one.

Hi Bill,
Just had a look and it is malaware not a virus as such, there is a few free malaware programs on the web that will remove it.
qvo6 is a pain but rest assured from what I have read it will not corrupt the comp just take over the web host page.
I would recommend Adaware for have used the program before, they have a free download.

Windows in particular is wide open, no matter what you do, there are ports open everywhere and windows doesn't give the you control to close anything, just cop what you get, with your hand in your pocket constantly..
Wait until you experience a DDOS attack which are becoming more and more common, then you will have real problems and no access to your computer or data. Some say using open source won't stop DDOS attacks, but they can only deny you access to your computer, if they can get in, or through your server. If your server and personal system is open source, you have a chance, a fix will appear within a coupe of hours, id it is needed and so far never heard of s successful DDOS or virus attack on an open source system.
If it is windows or apple, that's it. Their systems are closed to you an just about everyone else, so you have to wait for them to do something and they will only do what increases their bottom line.

Sorry it didn't seem to work Bill. What happenned exactly. It maybe the malware resisting being removed not Hitman taking control,,, you should still have control IMHO.

depending on what version you are using, the easiest way is to use the restore function
every time you install a new program etc windows creates a restore point. restore it back to a restore point prior to your virus
i have done this numerous times for people, it works, virus no longer there, you still have all your photos and documents, and a lot less messing around as well

No advice offered other than, see the light and all will be well.
Windows may well be old technology in your eyes, however its still far and above the most popular OS on the planet, so instead of poking your tongue out at the original poster and saying I told ya so, why not try to assist.

I'm not very clever with computers but we had experience of not being able to access secure sites including our bank with Chrome. Uninstalled it and Windows if fine without it.

Don't like Chrome at all, very intrusive, Google tries to control everything.

I had that a few months ago and the adwCleaner did it for me, you will also need to get it out of Chrome, goto Chrome/Settings/Extensions and click on the rubbish bin.
the malware remover didn,t work,after scanning for 2 hours.Tried to remove it viaother ways. Only seems to affect chrome, strangely.Will try AdwCleaner.Bill

you also need to follow my advice below re chrome, it is a bugga to get rid of, do the adwcleaner first then the Chrome settings change

If your linux box/server is not patched and you haven't taken basic security measures, then off course it can be vulnerable. But unlike windows or apple, you have the power and administration ability to secure your pc extremely well.Plus you have all the tools, code access, support and help from millions of users and developers on line instantly. Nothing like that exists within windows or apple, you and your system is fully controlled by microsoft and apple, who leave them wide open to exploitation. It makes heaps of money for them as hey sell people or provide fixes which will only work on one particular type of attack and still, leaving your system wide open.
You should have read the links before posting them, you may have then realised you were posting exploits that were found during development of linux kernels and have been fixed, the majority many years old. No system is fully safe, but open source personal systems are able to be very close to safe, unlike any windows or apple systems, or their software. The problem is within apple and microsoft codes, which are last century and have security like swiss cheese, full of holes. In every release of a linux kernel, distro or software, there are always vulnerabilities and exploitable sections found. Closed system like win and apple don't let you see or attend to what's going on under the panel, so you never know until its to late.
Every day there's attempts to infiltrate my system when on lots of commercial sites, eBay and gumtree are excellent examples of where loads of junk comes through and no one notices. Browsers supposedly give you the power to delete things like cookies etc, but in win particularly, they are overridden and that's why all win computers have lots of tracking and exploitation cookies within their system, that don't show up. There's to much money it it for them to close down the revenue streams they create with their inbuilt vulnerabilities. With a secure open source, it's like someone throwing rocks at a steel wall, they make a sound as they hit and then bounce off as there's no way through.

OK that's good, now when you download anything make sure you do a CUSTOM download and unclick any other items you do not want, especially toolbars that can get installed, because that is what happened with the qv06 malware.
Now in regards to these guys talking about Linux v Windows, if you like Linux stick to it if you like Windows stick to it, each to his own, this topic was asking for help with Windows it was not asking what was the better operating system, the main thing is that bill is happy with the result.

Don't like Chrome at all, very intrusive, Google tries to control everything.
